Man, I love Fridays. First, it’s Friday, so you know, no need to say more about that. But if you’re also into movies, then Fridays are also cool, because it’s when studios like to release their movie trailers. Like this one, a trailer for the upcoming Donnie Yen martial arts flick “Ip Man”, where Yen plays the real-life Wing Chun master Yip Man, who is most famous for teaching some scrawny Chinese kid name Bruce Lee how to fight. Before that, though, he is credited with being the first martial arts master to bring Wing Chun to the populace in China. That, and according to the trailer, he also beat the living crap out of a lot of Japanese guys during World War II.
(Also, I have no idea why they didn’t call the movie “Yip Man” instead of “Ip Man”. Mind you, not that it matters, since by the time the film arrives on American shores, I’m sure the title will be, “Legend of the Yip Man” or “Legend of Wing Chun”, or something equally generic, but with the word “Legend” in it.)
A semi-biographical account of Yip Man, the first martial arts master to teach the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun.
Basically, it’s about a Chinese guy played by Donnie Yen who can punch really, really fast. If I could punch that fast, I’d be, like, the king of fast-punching or something. Seriously, imagine getting pummeled like that in a fight. Tres embarassing, no?
“Ip Man” opens in Hong Kong December 18.

sweet. Any idea if it’s coming to american theaters at all Nix?
Bey Logan over at Dragon Dynasty have been blogging about the movie, so chances are they have the inside track to nab the foreign rights. If it doesn’t hit theaters (maybe limited release), it’ll definitely arrive on DVD next year, most likely courtesy of DD.

The film is called Ip Man not Yip Man presumably because this is the correct way to spell his name.
The film is called Ip Man because it’s the mandarin pronunciation (mainland china). Yip Man is the Cantonese pronunciation (Hong Kong)… but they’re both right.
The Mandarin pronunciation of his name is actually ‘Ye Wen’. Ip Man or Yip Man are simply different (arbitrary) spellings for the Cantonese pronunciation of his name. It would seem ‘Ip Man’ is the recorded or more widely recognised version of the spelling.
The clue is in his sons names Ip Chun & Ip Ching therefore the correct spelling for his name is indeed Ip Man not Yip Man.
The pure wing chun choreography done by Donnie Yen is the best I have seen in a movie. My Sifu studied under Sifu Hawkins, who was Bruce Lee s friend and training partner when they studied wing chun under Yip Man.
