Donnie Yen will soon be seen in Yuen Woo-ping’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” sequel next year, but until then, he’s playing an ancient warrior who is accidentally de-iced in the new movie “Iceman” (not to be confused with the Michael Shannon hitman drama “The Iceman”). Just in time, too, because there’s a bad guy running around modern Hong Kong and he needs to be stopped. Like, pronto! Check out the first trailer for “Iceman”, which has zero dialogue, so you don’t have to worry about English subtitles for all those Chinese dialogue, cause there ain’t none.
For a gist of the plot, here ya go:
In 2013, funded by a mysterious rich, squire Tang digs up three ancient icemen from the outskirt of China. They are Ying (Donnie Yen), Niehu (Yu Kang) & Sao (Wang Baoqiang). He transports the icemen to Hong Kong for further study but the vehicle involves in a traffic accident which unexpectedly defrosts Ying. Travelling 400 years in time to modern Hong Kong, Ying meets wasted May (Eva Huang) on Halloween by chance, who gives him shelter. With intelligence & hard-work, Ying soon grasps the idea of modern society with the help of internet. Living under the same roof, Ying & May gradually fall for each other….
Ah, the Interwebs. What can’t it do?
The film is directed by Wing-cheong Law (“Running Out of Time 2” and a pair of the “Tactical Unit” movies), and features, among other things, Donnie Yen on a horse battling a sports car and what appears to be a major bladder problem. Yen, of course, doesn’t just star, he’s also the film’s action director, which I suspect will be a stronger selling point than Wing-cheong Law directing.
Freezing either later this year or sometime next year. Either/or. Also in 3D, if that matters to you.
