Olen Steinhauer’s spy thriller “The Tourist”, not to be mistaken with the similarly titled (and amusing misfire) “The Tourist” starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, has been acquired by Sony Pictures as a directing vehicle for director Doug Liman.
A gritty thriller set in the world of covert spies, “The Tourist” is the first of a series of novels starring a burnt out spy name Milo Weaver, who works for “a clandestine U.S. intelligence agency that battles global organized crime, terrorists and the like.” In the first book, “just when he has finally found some happiness, an investigation into the death of a hired killer he’d been hunting threatens to ruin everything.”
Liman will be coming off the Tom Cruise sci-fi war epic “All You Need is Kill”, but he’s probably most known for directing the first installment of the Matt Damon’s “Bourne” franchise. Or not. You’d be hardpressed to find anyone who still remembers that Liman helped kick-start the series, given how much credit Paul Greengrass and Damon have gotten since.
On the plus side, Liman is also the man behind “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Jumper”, so action-packed thrillers are nothing he hasn’t done before.
Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will produce for Sony Pictures.
