DreamWorks to Adapt Oni Press’s The Damned

It’s Monday, so of course that means another studio has just bought up a comic book to turn it into a movie. The latest victim — er, I mean, lotto winner is “The Damned” from Oni Press, which follows a detective who investigates a new gang in town. The catch, I’m guessing, is that the gang is either composed of vampires or werewolves or demons or a combination of those things. You know, “Hellboy”, but with gangbangers. Or something like that. David DiGilio will adapt the comics for DreamWorks, with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald producing.

Described as horror-noir, “Damned” follows a Los Angeles detective who discovers that a new gang with ties to the supernatural has infiltrated the city.

Oni Press has a better description, and this tidbit: the comic is actually set during Prohibition! (Maybe they’ll change it for the movie, who knows…)

During the prohibition era, gangsters grew rich on vices of the people, and rivalries between criminal organizations resulted in open war. But unknown to the masses, a more sinister power controlled the crime cartels, using greed, gluttony, lust, and other sins to fuel a much more lucrative trade: mortal souls. Three demon families—the Aligheris, the Roarkes, and the Verlochin—control soul-trafficking within the city, capitalizing on “the rackets” to lead unfortunates into their grasp and poor Eddie is caught in the middle…

Oni also has a 40-page preview of the comics for you over at their site here.
