Who is being dumb here? I don’t know, but Warner Bros. is apparently not willing to risk the chance that it’s them by coughing up the $30 million or so it’ll cost to make a sequel to the 1994 raunchy comedy hit “Dumb and Dumber”. The sequel comes with stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, along with writers/directors the Farrelly Brothers attached for the second go round.
The studio has washed their hands of Harry and Lloyd’s wacky antics, and the producers will now be shopping the sequel around to other studios.
For the longest time there, no one seemed all that interested in making a sequel, especially the studio, and it was up to Carrey to make a real big public stink about it. Then “Dumb and Dumber To” (as it’s being called) finally came together. And now it appears the studio has changed its mind again.
Why? The trades think it might have something to do with the under performing “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”, in which Carrey co-starred. The film did poorly at the box office, and maybe it’s signalling to the studio that Jim Carrey’s time has come and gone. And let’s face it, this is Carrey’s franchise. No one’s going to watch “Dumb and Dumber To” for Jeff Daniels. No offense to the 3 Jeff Daniels diehard fans out there.
