Leave it to Hollywood to turn something as respectable as the Navy’s formerly uber secretive SEAL Team 6 into a silly horror movie idea about Navy SEALs fighting supernatural demons and monsters and whatnot. That’s the idea behind the movie “SEAL Team 666” (Get it? 666 instead of 6? Gut buster!), which has Dwayne Johnson currently attached as its lead, as well as executive produce.
The movie will be based on the series of books by Weston Ochse, and will chronicle “an elite group of Navy SEALs who battle demons and assorted threats and discover that there’s a greater supernatural force bent on destroying the world.”
Evan Spiliotopoulos, who penned “Battle for Terra” and recently the Dwayne Johnson vehicle “Hercules: The Thracian Wars”, will adapt the books for MGM. There is currently no director attached yet, so who knows, this might end up in the toilet of development hell and never happen. Until then…
SEAL Team 666 to the rescue! Get it? 666? Instead of just 6? Oh, it gets more clever every time I say it out loud. (Actually, I’m just mad I didn’t come up with the idea first. Dammit!)
And no, I’ll try not to remind you that this smells a tad like Johnson’s 2005 movie “Doom”, in which he played the leader of an elite group tasked with saving the world from monsters and whatnot. And yes, since there is a series of books, they are obviously eyeballing a potential franchise here. When has Hollywood NOT looked at a movie and seen a potential franchise? That would be back in the old days, when they were just worried about making ONE good movie first. Those days are looooooooong gone, kids.
