While the spin-off TV show based on his popular action-comedy franchise didn’t make it over at CBS (the producers of “Beverly Hills Cop” the TV show are still shopping it to other channels), it looks like Eddie Murphy and Paramount realize there are still more stories to tell featuring the older Alex Foley. (The TV show would have followed Foley’s son, played by “Percy Jackson’s” Brandon T. Jackson, with Murphy showing up intermittently as dad.)
The studio and Murphy are now moving forward on a “Beverly Hills Cop 4”, with the studio slapping some bucks over the direction of screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to pen them a script. Appelbaum and Nemec previously wrote “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and the upcoming “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” remake for the studio.
No word on what will happen to the TV show, or what the fourth movie will be about, but given that Murphy is back as the lead, it’s probably not going to be about his son. The strange thing is, apparently the show (from “The Shield” producer Shawn Ryan) did really well with focus groups, but CBS decided to take a flyer on it anyway. I wonder if they know something? Or maybe the show just wasn’t old-skewing enough for them. CBS is the home of generic cookie-cutter procedural shows, after all.
We’ll see where the show ends up (I’m guessing it will land somewhere), and what happens with Alex Foley in “Beverly Hills Cop 4”.
One thing’s for sure: don’t fall for the banana in the tailpipe, boys!
