Eddie Murphy is The Riddler, Says British Magazine with Suspect Credibility

Our Brit readers seem to take offense whenever I write an article and mention that some of their newspapers are worst than our tabloid rags when it comes to, ahem, accuracy. Sure, our National Enquirer and the such tends to make up news as they go for the express purpose of selling papers, but you gotta give them credit — every now and then they actually break real news that affects the entire nation. I can’t really say the same about a lot of so-called news magazines from Across the Pond. To wit: UK mag The Sun is reporting that Eddie Murphy will play the Riddler, Shia LaBeouf will play Robin, and the title of the third “Batman Begins” film will be … “Gotham”.

But hey, don’t take my word for it. Here’s The Sun:

FUNNYMAN EDDIE MURPHY will play The Riddler in the next Batman movie, The Sun can reveal.

The Beverly Hills Cop star, 47, has been signed up by British director CHRISTOPHER NOLAN to reprise the role played by JIM CARREY in 1995’s Batman Forever.

The film, set for a 2010 release, is being developed under the working title Gotham.

Execs have also signed up rising Transformers star SHIA LABEOUF, 22, to play Robin.

Meanwhile, Brit RACHEL WEISZ is said to be up for the Catwoman role.

Insiders also revealed to The Sun the flick will end on a cliffhanger over whether Batman survives a blast at Wayne Towers.

Did you get that? Two mega casting announcements and one rumor. But that’s not all! They even know how the movie will end! I’m telling you, The Sun either has Christopher Nolan on their staff or they have his nanny, who sneaks a peak at Nolan’s movie scripts before he shoots them. Or, er, neither.

And yet, I have to admit, “Gotham” might not be such a bad title for the third film. Although I think they might go with something more descriptive, like maybe “The Caped Crusader” or “The Dark Knight Detective”. Or hey, how about “The Dark Knight Returns” or “The Dark Knight Strikes”?

Anyhoo. Take this “news” for what you will.
