Well it seems Tayna is not necessarily a native English speaker and beyond that BOPE are para-military. They aren’t regular police like SWAT they come from the Army. And beyond that I think by soldier she means: one who fights to protect us. A soldier does not have to been in the military. A soldier can be anyone who lays their life on the line to protect his/her country’s citizens from any danger foreign or domestic. So even if they were regular police, I would call them soldiers.

Didn’t you watch the movie?? the weapons are sold to the drug dealers by the policemen… They have been doing that since the 50’s… there is a documentary that shows how the traffic in rio got to this level. it’s called Retratos de uma guerra particular, I think. It’s possible to see it on youtube.

actually the guns come from the same place of FARC´s guns, US and Europe, they trade drugs for guns with the criminal organizations of your countries that sell the drugs there.

What the movie doesn´t show is where the weapons and the drug come from: FARC (Colombia), politycal allies of Brazilian ruling party!

I don’t believe the Brazilian ruling patty is helping the traffic bringing the drugs and weapons to the “favelas” from FARC Colombia! It is going on for decades!
I think that here in USA you can find more drugs than any other country!
Does any one know where in the world most of the drugs are consume?
I would like to find out!

I just watched this on DVD (legal copy) and it is BY FAR the best movie ever produced in Brazil. City of God is a close second, but Tropa de Elite is unmatched in its depth and sheer brilliance. DO NOT MISS THIS when it comes to a theater near you.

The movie will be released in US cinemas probably on May 2008. It will be distributed by Weinstein Brothers Company (formerly Miramax owners).

Btw, the movie won the Golden Bear in the Berlin Festival.

I saw it when I was in Brazil over christmas. A movie doesn’t get much better. I just hope it hits the cinemas all over Europe real soon. I believe the jury for the Oscar awards this year has an easy task in picking the best movie… A must see.

An amazing film that makes me remember the days I walked in the favelas and saw the kids with heavy weapons. These BOPE guys are just as bad as the criminals in my opinion..but ye, someone has to do the dirty work.
A must see! So go check it out.
