Tom Cruise has been scheduled to front Warner Bros.’ “All You Need is Kill”, an adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel of the same name for a while now, with “Jumper’s” Doug Liman directing. But so far, that’s been the extent of the casting on the film, or indeed, any movement whatsoever.
Well consider that changed: the trades now report that Emily Blunt is in talks to join Cruise and Liman on the sci-fi war movie.
The plot of the film finds Earth under assault from “mimics”, alien bug-like invaders that threaten to overwhelm the planet lest humanity can hold them off using a new combat weapon called mechs. That comes in mighty handy when the hero (Cruise’s character) finds himself stuck in an endless, “Groundhog Day”-type loop, where whenever he dies, he ends up reliving the same day over and over again, eventually transforming from a green recruit into a fearsome warrior.
Blunt is in talks to play the film’s female lead, a fellow soldier who battles alongside Cruise. In the book, that would be Rita Vrataski, a super badass U.S. special forces soldier who aids the hero and becomes a love interest for him.
This would be one mighty interesting casting choice. As you’ll recall, at one point Marvel really, really wanted Blunt to play The Black Widow in “Iron Man 2″, but she chose “Gulliver’s Travels” over the comic book movie instead. Yeah, not the best choice there, that one. As far as I know, Blunt has never really played a tough, badass action hero before, which is what she would have to be in “All You Need is Kill”, as ol Rita is quite the killer.
