That’s the word from Deadline, who says Sony Pictures Entertainment will “imminently offer” the role of Mary Jane Watson to Emma Stone in Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot. Mind you, this doesn’t mean MJ will be the love interest for Peter Parker (aka Andrew Garfield). That honor goes to the actress who lands the Gwen Stacy role. At least, in the first movie.
Yup, according to the article, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy will once again be involved in Peter Parker’s life (they were also very much involved in Sam Raimi’s last “Spider-Man” movie, then played by Kirsten Dunst and Bryce Dallas Howard). In the reboot, Gwen Stacy will be the love interest, while Mary Jane will figure into Pete’s life later in the proposed trilogy.
With Stone expected to field the offer for Mary Jane Watson (and probably accept; she’d be nuts not to, right?), that leaves Gwen Stacy. Actresses in line for the part include Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott. Of the foursome, Agron is in the TV show “Glee”, and is in the upcoming “I am Number Four”; and Mia Wasikowska was in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”. I have no idea who the other two ladies are.
So there you have it. Emma Stone will probably play Mary Jane Watson, and one of four women will play Gwen Stacy.
Sony expects to have the 3D reboot out to the masses by Summer 2012.
