CJ Entertainment apparently can’t quite make up their mind about the title of their version of “Top Gun” starring Rain (of “Ninja Assassin” fame). The film is either called “Return to Base” if you believe the trailers, or “Soar into the Sun” if you believe the posters. Either way, it’s pretty much a South Korean popcorn blockbuster in every respects, from the kinda routine script to the awesome production values to the ridiculously cool aerial stunts. Todd previously posted this same trailer, but it was in Korean, and since I’m pretty sure only .00001% of my readership actually understands the Korean tongue, here’s an English-subtitled version for the rest of you. Please to enjoy.
South Korean elite Air Force pilot Tae-hun finds himself kicked out of his top notch team and demoted into a combat unit after a cocky and dangerous air show demonstration. On the first day of his transfer to F15K, he meets Cheol-hui, the unit’s own top gun. Tae-hun’s free-spiritedness and Cheol-hui’s rule abiding ways come into conflict almost immediately. Meanwhile, Tae-hun befriends the rest of the members on his new squad, including Se-yeong, whom he falls in love with. Tae-hun continues with his antics until one day, a reconnaissance mission for the squad turns into an unexpected incident, ending in an untimely death and disappearance of a fellow teammate. The unit receives an emergency announcement that an unidentified combat plane has entered into their territory, and Tae-hun and Cheol-hui are forced to set aside their disagreements and lead their members to stop a war and rescue their missing comrade.
The film stars Rain, Joon-sang Yoo, Seong-su Kim and is directed by Dong-won Kim (2009’s “City of Damnation”). The Koreans get it first August 15, 2012. Look for it Stateside in 2013 or thereabouts.
