Wow. Josh Hartnett. Haven’t heard that name in a while. Well you’ll be hearing a little bit more from Mr. Hartnett, because he’s just been cast as the male lead in Showtime’s “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”-esque show “Penny Dreadful”.
Hartnett will be joined by the lovely Eva Green (“300: Rise of an Empire”) on the show, from screenwriter John Logan (“Gladiator”) and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes.
The “psycho-sexual horror series” (whatever that means) will premiere on cable network Showtime with an 8-episode first-season, and will find Hartnett playing Ethan Chandler, described as “a man of action and daring who isn’t afraid of violence. He’s charming and brash but there are demons behind his eyes. He’s more complicated than he likes to admit.”
The last movie I saw Hartnett in was 2010’s “Bunraku”, which was pretty good, but he hasn’t really done much of note since 2007’s vampire actioner “30 Days of Night”. At least, nothing that most people have seen without really looking for, anyway.
Green, on the other hand, will be the show’s main/only female character, playing Vanessa, described as “enigmatic with haunted eyes and utterly composed. She will prove herself a force to be reckoned with and the heroine of the series.”
This wouldn’t be Green’s first TV show. She was the villain/main female lead in Starz’s short-lived “Camelot” TV show, and was easily the best darn thing about that show.
“Penny Dreadful” has previously been described as being in the same vein as Alan Moore’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, and will be set in Victorian London (where the show will also be shot on location), and feature a gathering of famous literary characters who band together to battle supernatural enemies.
Coincidentally enough (or is it?), Fox is also developing a “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” TV series. What a coincidence!
“Penny Dreadful” is expected to start rolling this October for a Spring premiere on Showtime.
