Is it possible that all the “Donnie Darko” fanatics out there haven’t heard about the upcoming Richard Kelly-less “Donnie Darko 2” yet, since there doesn’t seem to be as much fervor over the sequel as I had anticipated? Possibly. In any case, like it or not, the studios are making a sequel, and they’ve added two more names to the cast — Elizabeth Berkley (“Showgirls”) and Briana Evigan (pictured below, recently in “Step it Up: The Streets”). They’ll be joining a cast that already includes Ed Westwick, Justin Chatwin, and Daveigh Chase, who reprises her role as Samanta Darko from the original film.
The Hollywood Reporter has more on the casting and the story:
The story, set seven years after the first film, follows Donnie Darko’s sister, Samantha, who, in dealing with her broken family, flees town with her best friend (Evigan) when they are plagued by bizarre visions.
Berkley is playing a speed freak-turned-Jesus freak whose sentiments about ridding the world of its exponential sin are rivaled only by her infatuation with her dreamy pastor.
Shooting on “Donnie Darko 2” has commenced in Utah.
