John Woo gets romantic (but somehow still manages to squeeze in plenty of groovy slow motion shots and things exploding and guns shooting machine guns) in his new historical epic “The Crossing.” The pan-Asian film tells the story of three couples caught up in the Chinese Revolution during the late 1940s, forcing them to flee to the island of Taiwan. Hmm, I wonder how that’s going to play with Mainland China?
The extended trailer features Woo talking about the movie and weaves in plenty of footage of war and love and tragedy and all that good stuff from the flick. Asian audiences should eat this thing up–they love tragic love stories–and I can see it getting some traction stateside thanks to Woo’s name. Maybe.
Anyways, take a look at the trailer below and decide for yourself if this is something you might want to keep an eye on. I think it looks pretty dang good myself, but then again, I’ve been a John Woo fanboy from way back, so maybe I’m a tad bias.
Starring Tong Dawei, Huang Xiaoming, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Masami Nagasawa, Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-kyo.
Chinese theaters get it first this December. Depending on how it does there, we may or may not end up getting it here in the good ol states.
