Fantastic Four 2 Surfs to Top of Box Office

The most interesting thing about news that the “Fantastic Four” sequel topped the weekend box office isn’t that it did so, but how many variations people can write the headline saying so, and NOT use the word “surf” in it. At last count? NONE. In any case, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” managed to overcome bad to middling reviews by topping the box office, bringing in $57.4 million in 3 days. That’s about $1 million better than the original, which scored $56 when it came out in 2005 and shocked pretty much everyone.

The substance-free “Ocean’s 13″ fell to #2 with $19.1 million, while the romantic comedy “Knocked Up” remained amazingly strong at #3 with $14.5 million.

The Top 10 at the box office shaped up as such, with total take in parenthesis:

1. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer $57,400,000 ($57,400,000)
2. Ocean’s Thirteen $19,105,000 ($69,810,000)
3. Knocked Up $14,535,000 ($90,482,000)
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End $12,024,000 ($273,757,000)
5. Surf’s Up $9,300,000 ($34,671,000)
6. Shrek the Third $9,007,000 ($297,249,000)
7. Nancy Drew $7,135,000 ($7,135,000)
8. Hostel: Part II $3,000,000 ($14,182,000)
9. Mr. Brooks $2,820,000 ($23,441,000)
10. Spider-Man 3 $2,500,000 ($330,016,000)
