Nolan + Superman = fanboys ruin pants. Could it be true? Could Christopher Nolan, the man who resurrected Batman from the ashes of rubber nipples and cheesy villains actually be involved in developing a “Superman” reboot for Warner Bros.? Yes, it could be, at least according to Deadline. According to the site, the WB has asked Nolan to “mentor” the development of a new “Superman” franchise for them.
This won’t be a sequel to Bryan Singer’s 2006 “Superman Returns”, but rather a completely new take on the franchise. Basically, a reboot. While it’s doubtful Nolan would also direct (again, the site mentions that the WB is looking for Nolan’s help to “mentor” the picture, which I assume means developing and then producing, so the WB can then later proclaim in the ads, “From the makers of ‘Batman Begins’…” i.e. Nolan), there is no word on Bryan Singer returning, or star Brandon Routh slipping on the tights again, though both are [...]

Steven Soderbergh (“Oceans 11″, “The Informant!”, “Traffic”) has dropped all the other projects currently in the fire to direct “Contagion” with Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard all either closely orbiting or signed to star. “Contagion” was written by “Informant!” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns.
“Contagion” comes together as a multi storied view of a virus outbreak told across multiple continents (we have 7). With the H1N1 virus scare so lately in the news, there have been fewer attempts to leverage the public’s fear with quality entertainment as I would have expected. Expect this puppy to start filming pretty soon. Thanks Playlist.

Wow, so Tim Robbins is playing dad characters in movies now, huh? And we’re not talking about toddlers or little cute tykes here, we’re talking about grown men. Sheesh, is Tim Robbins that old? Am I that old? Damn. Anyways, apparently Tim Robbins is now old enough to get cast in Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern” as the father of the film’s human villain, Dr. Hector Hammond, to be played by Peter Sarsgaard. In the movie, the younger Hammond is infused with psychic powers with which he uses to challenge the hero’s mighty space ring, presumably while the older, Senator Hammond looks on disapprovingly.
Ryan Reynolds will play Hal Jordan aka the Green Lantern, while “Gossip Girl” Blake Lively is his very leggy love interest, Carol Ferris.
Shooting on the epic sci-fi comic book movie starts March start in New Orleans.

Rachel Weisz is the latest A-lister to move into Daniel Craig and Jim Sheridan’s horror/thriller “Dream House”. The film already has Craig in the lead, and recently added Naomi Watts to the cast. Weisz’s casting rounds out the film’s main principles. In the film, Craig will play a successful publisher who quits his job and relocates his wife (to be played by Weisz) and two daughters to a quaint New England town, only to discover that their perfect new home was the murder scene of a mother and her two children. Naomi Watts will play their neighbor, a woman who was close to the murdered family, and will probably have some stories to tell the new arrivals. That’s the kind of role usually reserved for old ladies in rocking chairs, so it’s curious they’ve cast Watts.
Shooting for the movie gets underway this Sunday in Toronto. Jim Sheridan (“In America”) will direct for Morgan Creek.

After a lot of fits and starts, Twentieth Century Fox seems finally ready to make a “24″ movie, possibly as early as the end of the current Season 8. There is no deal in place for the show’s Season 9, and many believe the current season will also be the show’s last on TV, with the jump to feature films expected. This is probably the best possible move for the show. Let’s face it, when Jack Bauer becomes someone’s grandpa, that’s when you know your show, along with your hero, is simply, well, getting old. Not older, but just old.
According to Variety, Fox has already hired writer/director Billy Ray (of “Flightplan” fame, and not to be confused with the guy living off his daughter’s questionable singing and acting talents) to bang out a script for them. The studio apparently loved Ray’s pitch for a “24″ movie, which would take Jack Bauer to Europe. I suppose that sounds like as good [...]

Apparently yes, according to a source of Latino Review. For now, at least. Apparently the big sticking point is that the studio wanted Rob Cohen, the film’s director, to introduce a central leading man to the movie instead of the ensemble cast that the film calls for. This, after Cohen had already gone to Romania and spent something along the lines of $12 million building sets and doing pre-production. And people wonder why Hollywood movies cost so much. Because studios think nothing of shutting down a production after spending $12 million, that’s why.
Rob Cohen had previously passed up the chance to direct the third “xXx” movie with returning star Vin Diesel in order to direct “Medieval”, described as a “Magnificent Seven in the Middle Ages”. More details about the film, including a script review, can be found here. If this is true, then it’s definitely a case of “too bad”, because this is exactly the kind of action movie I [...]

Wow, another movie in 3D. Figures. In any case, at least this time around the 3D gimmick will get a boost from Amber Heard (below), who will be showing off her glorious self in the format along with “Prison Break’s” William Fichtner (left). The duo will be joining the cast of Nicolas Cage’s revenge road thriller “Drive Angry” for director Patrick Lussier (“My Bloody Valentine 3D”). The script, by Todd Farmer, finds Cage playing a man who goes on the road in search of the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. No word on what characters Heard and Fichtner will be playing.
Shooting on the thriller starts this March in Shreveport, Louisiana for a February 11, 2011 release.

USA Network’s “Burn Notice” is probably the best show on TV that most people have never heard of, but there’s enough of an audience for it that it’s currently in its fourth season and still going strong. And apparently it’s also a show that the writers of “Saturday Night Live” just don’t “get”, thus the creation of this skit involving a talk show that’s entirely devoted to solving the mystery, “What is Burn Notice”? It’s not an entirely bad skit, there are some good jokes in there, and like all SNL skits, it’s always better when the castmembers can justify staring offscreen for the cue cards cause, let’s face it, no one has bothered to actually learn their lines for the show for about a couple of decades now.

The veteran action star/intellectual titan was recently hired to present the Melodifestivalen in Sweden, and thanks to the endless wonders of this thing we call “The Internet”, the event’s opening number has been uploaded by kindly individuals for all to see. And while Lundgren’s unique rendition of Elvis Preley’s “A Little Less Conversation” is truly inspired, it’s nothing compared to his impromptu drum solo. The whole thing is thoroughly amusing and, what’s more, completely safe for work.

The film, which stars Eli Roth, Henry Thomas, and Kevin Corrigan, chronicles the exploits of a film crew as they attempt to shoot a movie inside a haunted warehouse. As you can tell from the trailer below, the picture looks promising, and it’s good to see that Henry Thomas is still alive and well. The DVD is tentatively scheduled for release on September 21st. If you haven’t seen the trailer, get to steppin’, slacker.

If I remember correctly, Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist’s 2008 supernatural thriller “Possession” was supposed to appear on North American DVD sometime last year. For whatever reason, the film vanished into the vapor, never to be seen again. For those of you who have been sitting tensely on pins and needles since experiencing the first trailer nearly two years ago, the knowledge that “Possession”, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace, will joyously invade your living rooms on March 9th should be comforting. Will it be worth the wait? Judging from the trailer embedded below, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Anyone who has bore witness to “The Return” knows just how boring Gellar can be. You know it’s true, fanboy. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The boys at NY Mag seems dismissive of this new film called “Mr. and Mrs. Jones” from Fox, but I don’t kinda mind it at all. Sure, it’s basically a retread of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” from 2005, the film that starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as killers who get hitched, realizes they’re enemies, and try to kill each other, but it’s not actually a reboot per se. At least, not from the sound of the plot, which will have two 20-something spies pretending to be a married couple once they finish spy school. See? They didn’t get married because they fell in love, they’re just pretending, and they’re spies this time, not killers.
For those who don’t know, the original creators of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” actually tried to do another iteration of the movie as a TV series, with “Fast and Furious” star Jordana Brewster in the Jolie role. The show never went past the pilot stage, unfortunately. [...]

From its relatively humble beginnings in 2000 as a direct to DVD release, the Japanese horror “Ju-on” series went on to become one of the modern Asian ghost genre’s most influential franchises, and one of the country’s most popular domestic blockbusters and exports, also inspiring a series of Hollywood remakes. Original developer, writer and director Takashi Shimizu returned in 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of his shrieking ghosts with two new short features, “White Ghost” and “Black Ghost” (literally “Old Lady in White” and “Girl in Black”), which now arrive together on one DVD. The two continue very much in the manner of the classic originals, being scare packed spook shows rather than aiming for the more psychological terror of “Ringu” and other key J-Horror releases.
The first of the two, “White Ghost” was directed by Miyake Ryuta, who previously worked with Shimizu on the omnibus “Tales of Terror”, and stars actress model Minami Akina as a high school [...]

Korean indie “Written”, the second outing from writer director Kim Byung Woo is a brain teaser of a film which doesn’t blur the line between fiction and reality, so much as it jumps all over it, before proceeding to erase it completely. Needless to say, the film is one which requires a fair amount of work and commitment from the viewer – not that this should be seen as a bad thing by any means, and Kim thankfully offers plenty of intellectual and philosophical rewards for those prepared to make the effort. Having originally been released back in 2007, premiering at the Pusan Film Festival, it now arrives on DVD, giving a wider audience the chance to scratch their heads and try and figure out exactly what may or may not be going on.
The film opens sensibly enough in generic thriller fashion, with an unfortunate man (played by actor Lee Jin Suk, recently in “Gangster High”) waking up in [...]

David Goyer has been one of the “behind-the-scenes” guys of the “Batman Begins” franchise since the very beginning, having scripted/contributed story ideas to the first two movies. He’s also expected back for the third one, and if this article over at Deadline is to be believed, Goyer has left his post as the showrunner of ABC’s faltering sci-fi show “Flash Forward” to start developing a script for the third Batman film with director Christopher Nolan’s brother, Johnathan Nolan, who has worked on his brother’s films “Memento”, “The Prestige”, and “The Dark Knight”.
Then again, this sounds a bit like speculation. Maybe Goyer just got tired of TV and wanted back in feature work. Maybe he really is working on a Batman 3 with the other Nolan. Either way, this is the first really decent Batman 3 story in a while, so just go with it.

A trio of Captain America news for ya today. First up, director Joe Johnston has revealed to CHUD that The Invaders super team will indeed be joining Captain America as he battles the dastardly Nazis in his very own movie, “The First Avenger: Captain America” in 2011. And it won’t be a cameo appearance, either; apparently the costumed team will be showing up for “the entire second half” of the movie, since the first half will no doubt be spent detailing Captain America’s origins as he transforms from a weakling into the perfect soldier that we’ve come to know and love.
The original comic book Invaders roster consisted of Captain America and his sidekick Bucky, the original android Human Torch (not to be confused with the “Fantastic Four’s” wise-cracking Torch), the Torch’s sidekick Toro (back then everyone had a sidekick), and Namor the Sub-Mariner. Later, Brit siblings Union Jack and Spitfire joined the fun, followed by Miss America, Whizzer, the Blazing [...]

Continuing his quest to star in, or at least become attached to every movie ever made by Hollywood from 2009 onward, Aussie Sam Worthington has officially signed on to star in the true-life murder mystery “The Texas Killing Fields”. The film will be produced by “Heat” director Michael Mann, who has given the job of directing the sure-to-be moody (and gritty and haunting and apparently very hardcore) crime film to his daughter, Ami Canaan Mann (pictured left, with daddy), who last directed some movie you’ve never heard of in 2000, and a couple of TV episodes, one of which was produced by her daddy. Oh, Hollywood, you and your shameless nepotism.
The script for “Killing Fields” (since retitled “The Fields”) is by Donald F. Ferrarone, and will star Worthington as a local Texas cop who teams up with a New York transplant to investigate two decades worth of disappearances and homicides in the industrial wastelands surrounding Gulf Coast refineries. Or as [...]

Who dat? The Superbowl champs, of course. In case you missed it (if you’re like me, you probably spent a lot of the commercial breaks between the beer and the bathroom), here are the movie spots that showed up during this year’s Superbowl game between the Colts and the Saints. The game was great, but so were a couple of the spots. There was a second “Robin Hood” spot that rocked the joint, filled with those stellar visuals I’ve been waiting for, and the “Prince of Persia” one wasn’t half bad, either. The one for “The Wolfman” was actually pretty decent to boot. Note: If I miss any, point them out in the comments section and I’ll add them.

Of all the movies in all the world, who would have thought it would be a sappy chick flick starring Channing Tatum called “Dear John” that would eventually end “Avatar’s” reign at the top of the box office charts? Well that’s exactly what happened this weekend, as James Cameron was finally knocked off his throne as king of the world with his “Avatar” falling to second place in its eighth week of release. The record-breaking sci-fi epic continues to break all kinds of record, including surpassing Cameron’s own “Titanic” in domestic gross, though doing it with fewer ticket sales, thanks to a combination of today’s higher ticket prices and extra 3D cha-ching.
The romantic drama “Dear John”, based on a novel by tearjerker extraordinaire writer Nicholas Sparks, turned in an impressive $32 million debut, using its large female demo to push “Avatar” to the second spot with $23.6 million. The week’s only other major studio offering, the action buddy movie “From [...]

For a kid who was this close to losing out on the franchise of a lifetime, young Taylor Lautner sure has his hands in a lot of pies. In fact, if he actually ends up doing all the movies and projects he’s committed himself to, he might just end up either surpassing all his “Twilight” co-stars combined, or burn out before he hits his ’20s. It’ll be intriguing to find out. Right now, he’s got everything from another “Twilight” movie (or two) in the wings, then “Northern Lights”, then the “Max Steel” franchise to front, the “Die Hard with Teens” movie “Cancun”, and now … another franchise, “Stretch Armstrong” has been made official with the werewolf kid in the lead. And oh yeah, Lautner turns 18 later this month. What were you doing with your time when you were 18?
Universal Pictures has made it official to Access Hollywood that Lautner is their stretchy leading man in a “Stretch Armstrong” movie [...]
