A few days ago Variety reported (you kind of have to mine for it in the article) that veteran editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch were being brought in to recut The Wolfman, even though the release date is only a few months away, on February 12, 2010. This could be a very bad thing for the film, culminating in what has already been a tumultuous creation process, but it could be a good thing. Films can often be made in the editing room, and both editors have had extensive experience. Goldblatt has edited such films as Terminator 2 and Pearl Harbor, while Murch worked on The English Patient and Cold Mountain, winning an Oscar for sound editing in Apocalypse Now.
The point is, I hope that the film has a chance to succeed because it still looks very cool. The featurette below has some behind the scenes footage and interviews, which increases my excitement for the film. Benicio del Toro [...]

While there might be a hilarious buddy sitcom in here somewhere, Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, cinematic and literary savants respectively, are teaming up to produce a television cable miniseries, according to Variety, based on King’s recent book, Under the Dome, which is about an enigmatic force field that descends on a small Maine town. The plot synopsis might sound like Stephen King’s lamp monster, in which he can literally take any concept and turn it into a horror story, but critics are hailing it as a return to form for the prolific author.
On the other hand, Spielberg has been going strong in his old age, as if he’s on some cinematic Viagra, but he will only probably be involved in so much that Dreamworks is producing it, so it’s not like some mythical matchup, where Superman and Batman team up together, with King writing and Spielberg directing. Instead, Spielberg will probably have limited creative control, with only the powers [...]

Okay, so maybe he’s not actually mad about not being Mad Max in George Miller’s upcoming “Mad Max 4: Fury Road”, but he is a little shock that he wasn’t even asked about the role by ol Georgie. Being that, you know, Mad Max is Australian, will be shot in Australia, and Sam Worthington is currently Australia’s Golden Boy, it would seem like a natural fit. Not so much, because Miller has since hired British actor Tom Hardy (”Bronson”) to play a younger Mel Gibson in the sequel, set for a 2011 release.
Worthington tells The Telegraph about being passed up for the role:
“Like [fellow Australian actor] Eric (Bana), I’ve never been approached… I would have loved it. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be amazing… I’m sure (director) George (Miller) has his reasons. He’s obviously got his own ideas about the type of guy he wants.”

I gotta admit, as much as I don’t see Rose McGowan as Red Sonja, the fact that she seems completely gung-ho about making the movie happen come hell or high water sort of makes me want to see it. Surely, if the lead actress is this excited about a movie, it couldn’t be all bad — right? In any case, back in August McGowan tweeted that the movie was delayed, referencing “real life”, but didn’t really say what that meant. Now we know: she had injured herself, enough that it required surgery which is scheduled for later this year.
Says McGowan:
“I need one more arm surgery from nerve damage so I’m supposed to have that the beginning of December so if you see me anywhere I’ll be hobbling around with a cast. It’ll be very pretty. We’re hoping to start filming again in maybe a year.”
The reality is that the chances of a “Red Sonja” movie actually happening probably depends [...]

The midnight showing was sold out and electricity rocketed through the air from the excitement. It was as if a viewer was attending a midnight mass for a Goth Christmas, and when everyone got home, Edward and Jacob would have visited and left presents under the posters bearing their likeness. BOOYAH!! Everyone at Hot Topics is gettin’ laid tonight!
The amazingly rampant popularity of the “Twilight Saga” more or less makes the plot summary of this review obsolete. But for those who have lived in blissful ignorance, here is the obligatory recap.
Fearing he’s become a danger to Bella, Edward dumps her and decides he can’t live without her. So he travels to Italy to see the Volturi, the powerful vampire ruling class. He’s got a bizarre suicide plan where he’s hoping the Volturi will put an end to him once and far all. Bella meanwhile, occupies her spare time by becoming a daredevil adrenaline junkie.
I hadn’t heard that “Ong Bak” director Pachya Pinkaew was looking to get into the English-language movie scene until I stumbled across this report that the Thai director had signed on with Zero Gravity Management for his beyond-Thailand representation. The short article also mentions that Pinkaew is currently at work prepping his first English-ish language movie, the actioner “White Elephant” with Djimon Hounsou (”Blood Diamonds”).
While “White Elephant” will be Pinkaew’s first foray into making a movie for International audiences (one can reasonably assumed that with a Hollywood actor like Hounsou as the lead, this thing will have plenty of English dialogue, right?), he won’t necessarily have to leave the Thai border to do it. The plot has Housou playing an assassin who is hired by a businessman to avenge the murder of his daughter by white slave traders in Thailand.
“White Elephant” commences production in March on location in Bangkok.

With a fourth “Underworld” entry already greenlit by the studio, the biggest question on everyone’s mind (or at least, everyone who thinks werewolves and vampires fighting in a gothic setting with dark-blue scenery is awesome, anyway) is whether either of the franchise’s two British heroines will return in the leading role. Will it be Kate Beckinsale once again, as rumored, or her replacement Rhona Mitra? According to this latest report, it might be neither. Or possibly both. Okay, so I made the last part up, but one can dream, can’t one?
What is a sure thing, though, is that a writer has been assigned to pen the fourth movie in former “The Shield” scribe John Hlavin. The writer has confirmed that “Underworld 4″ will not be a prequel like the previous entry, and he added this:
“It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to [...]

I suppose that makes some kind of sense. Or as much sense as the movie could possibly make, I suppose, given its premise and what previously happened to one of the characters in the original. Thanks to reader ivica and the Dolph Ultimate fansite for the poster and DVD details.
When a team of former Soviet radicals seizes Chernobyl and threatens to unleash a lethal cloud of radioactive gas one hundred times deadlier than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined, the US military brings in a bio-mechanically enhanced super soldier, Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), to foil the plot.
It used to be that I thought Gerard Butler was attaching himself to way too many movies for his own good, and I made fun of him for it. Well guess what? Compared to Sam Worthington, Gerard Butler was an amateur. A scant day after Worthington was attached to the sci-fi “The Last Days of American Crime”, he’s now being rumored to be taking part in another movie — the based-on-true crime film “The Texas Killing Fields” with Bradley Cooper, who is himself on quite the roll after the mega success of “The Hangover”.
Apparently the film gained notoriety when Danny Boyle mentioned it earlier this year as one of the scripts he was considering post-”Slumdog Millionaire”, but according to Boyle, the script was so dark and so fantastic that it would never get made unless you got together “half a dozen super megastars” for the studio to even consider footing the bill.

Granted, the perfect timing for this post would have been yesterday, but hey, better late than never, right? In case you were still wondering what the movie is about, or if you should go see it, here’s a question: Do you like epic battle scenes? If the answer is Yes, then you should go see it. The film is a bit long, even at its current edited length of 2 hrs. 28 minutes. Trust me, that’s about 1 hour and 30 minutes shorter than the original Asian version, which clocked in at over 4 hours. Check out some battle scene clips from the movie below. Instead of the unfortunate March release date that some anticipated, two back-to-back episodes of “Chuck” will be airing Sunday, January 10, and then the show will immediately fall into its new slot, Mondays at 8. This means that, from January 10-11, we’ll be getting the first three episodes of the new 13 episode season.
For those that aren’t aware, “Chuck” is a comedy/drama about a man who, due to the actions of a former friend, has been sucked into the world of spies. It received much critical acclaim, and after the second season subsided at the show’s future was bleak, a “Save Chuck” campaign convinced NBC to bring the show back for a third season. **Spoiler Alerts** The second season ended in a somewhat strange fashion – Chuck “absorbed” the new Intersect, which not only gave him more government information lodged into his brain, he also [...]

The story is typical videogame stuff: a cargo pilot named William Agustus Grey crashes in the Bermuda Triangle and is transported to a parallel universe, where he must battle with human survivors against an alien threat. It’s hard to evaluate the feature film potential before playing the game (its release date is January 12, 2010), but videogame adaptations don’t exactly have a great track record. Risky Business quotes Capcom senior VP of licensing, Germaine Gioia:

She joins a cast that already includes “True Blood” star Stephen Moyer and Luiz Guzman.
The film sees Murphy playing a troubled divorcee named Mary Kee, who begins receiving strange telephone calls from a mystery caller that she soon realizes is calling her from the past. This, apparently, leads Mary to believe that she must kill the caller in order to save herself. I haven’t a clue what that means, but I suspect that isn’t the film’s big twist, since, well, it’s already been revealed, hasn’t it?

Well-executed promotional trailers for intense martial arts movies are not unlike a hit of crack: as soon as you you get that initial buzz, you instantly want more. The clip for Michael Chuah’s upcoming kung fu extravaganza “Fist of Dragon” is insanely tasty, and has quickly wormed its way to the top of my 2010 must-see list. Where did this film come from? Why haven’t I heard anything about it until this very moment? Had it not been for Twitch Film, I may have missed this one altogether. Which, of course, would have been a damn shame, as I love me some old-school kung fu.
Here’s the rundown of the plot:
Fist of Dragon” tells the story of Li, who comes to South East Asia by the request of his father to help out his uncle who has been facing financial difficulties. Li, upon arriving in the town, feels out of place due to the differences in cultures of the people here. [...]

Or perhaps, just the biggest movie of 2009. Either/or. According to the folks at online movie ticket vendor Fandango, advance ticket sales numbers for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has easily beat out every movie in the company’s 10-year history, including “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Stars Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” The film is also MovieTickets.com’s bestselling pre-sold title in its history. All that is leading industry insiders to predict something in the range of an $85 million opening weekend for Summit’s tale of lovelorn High School girls and their vampire/werewolf crushes. My own guess? Somewhere closer to $100 million.
To capitalize on the Chris Weitz-directed “New Moon”, Summit will be re-releasing the first “Twilight” (which has grossed over $380 million worldwide) back into 2,057 theaters on Thursday. It will then deliver “New Moon” into 3,500 theaters for its Thursday midnight showing, and expanding it to 4,024 by Friday morning. Basically, if you’re a diehard [...]

I don’t know if Felicia Hardy is going to be a villain in Spider-Man 4, but the rumors for a female part are so ubiqitous, Rachel McAdams and Julia Stiles having been rumored in as many days, that there must be some large role that necessitates the inclusion of a well-known actress. The rumors give off a lot of heat, but so far there has been no real light shed on the part. Now Deadline Hollywood is reporting that producers have approached Ann Hathaway for a starring role in the film. Since Kirsten Dunst is returning as Mary Jane Watson, the Black Cat seems to be the most obvious fit, given the prevalence of rumors.
Anne Hathaway is a quality actor and would be a real boon to the film, having been nominated for a best acting Academy Award, even though a lot of her best parts involve trying to define the role of a woman in contemporary society. One of [...]

Donnie Yen kicking ass on film is always cause for celebration. Yen may have been mired in some really awful vanity projects in his early Hong Kong film career, but he’s on a major streak of box office success (both domestically and internationally) in recent years, putting out some really good action projects like “Sha Po Lang” (or “Killzone” as it’s known internationally) and “Flash Point”. His latest was the period actioner “Ip Man”, another movie about a Chinese man battling Japanese occupation in China. Following “Ip Man”, Yen is set to star in “Chen Zhen”, where he will once again tangle with those Imperialist bastards.
In “Chen Zhen”, Yen will play a local resistance fighter in 1920s Shanghai. His character is believed dead after a bloody skirmish, only to resurface seven years later, just in time to uncover a plot involving the Chinese triads and the Japanese. Update: As noted in the comments section by reader Erick, the character “Chen [...]

A lot of comedy actors are pretty dispensible, even if they are highly paid, but there was nobody better suited than Jason Lee to play Earl Hickey in My Name is Earl, at least when he dons the moustache. With the cancellation of the series, Lee is working on several new projects, including Get Back, his directorial debut. THR says that it “tells the story of two music-obsessed friends who time travel back to 1966 London, where one gets caught in a love triangle with John Lennon and Yoko Ono”. That should be ripe for comedic material, but is it still relevant?
Lee is quite the busy man. While Alvin and the Chipmunks will soon be released, he has also finished shooting Kevin Smith’s A Couple of Dicks and George Gallo’s Columbus Circle. In the planning stages are an adult swim live-action comedy show and Delta Blues, a TNT show produced by the ever ubiquitous George Clooney: it’s apparently about a [...]
