Feel the Sting: The Green Hornet Trailer Debuts

On the heels of the first photos from Michel Gondry’s “Green Hornet”, comes the trailer premiere. Seth Rogen plays clueless noob to Jay Chou’s super kung fu sidekick guy in Master of Wackness Director Gondry’s first crack at an action-adventure movie”. The result is … huh. I’m not sure what to make of the trailer, actually. It’s actually more comedy than straight action, though there apparently is some of those, too, and Seth Rogen is playing, well, Seth Rogen. See for yourself, here’s the first trailer for “The Green Hornet”.

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles’ largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid’s shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt’s new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

Starring Christoph Waltz, Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Edward Furlong, Edward James Olmos, Tom Wilkinson, Jay Chou, Chad Colema, Sterling Cooper, Analeigh Tipton, David Harbour, Eddie Rouse, and directed by Michel Gondry.

Kato saves the day January 14, 2011.

UGH!! It's exactly what I hoped it wouldn't be. WHy couldn't they make him competant but still funny? An ass-kicker with a sense of humor. Nightwing does it and he can still scare the crap out of criminals. Like seriously. I don't want to watch Rogen run around pretending to be a hero, while Chou does all the cool stuff. OOoohh Rogen gets to shoot a gun. Grrrrr….I'm mad now. Gonna go watch that fan film to wash the taste out my mouth.

I really have no opinion other than I don't like that the martial arts appears to be done in slow motion.

I see they tried to do it like Iron Man (Keyword tried lol)

Kudos to Seth for dropping all the weight, but this film just doesn't work for me. The Green Hornet was not a comedian.

I'm hoping that with the next trailer we'll get a bit more serious action and less of the “Tommy boy” feel. It just doesn't work well for me. The comic seriously does a greta job of balancing comedy and action and yet still keeps it serious.

Example. There's a scene where the Hornet busts into a warehouse full of thugs having a criminalo meeting. He gives a quick speech about crime not being allowed to meet anywhere without his knowledge. The whole time they have their guns pointed at him. One guys cocks his gun and says something like “He doesn't have enough” stinger darts for all of us. GET HIM!” But is cut off by Hornet, “Did you just cock your gun?” “What?” “During that whole 'he can't have enough darts' speech did you point your gun at me AND THEN cock it? I mean really who does that?” That's the kinda stuff I wouldn't mind hearing and seeing. The scene comences into a pretty badass fight scene.

Yeah, this looks like another slob comedy for Rogen (including the obligatory blonde love interest), and it also seems reminiscent of “Big Trouble in Little China” (white lead is comedy relief while the Chinese “sidekick” gets most of the shit done). I think the unofficial Hong Kong version from the 90's took a similar route

Ok, I'm gonna take a chance and say you guys are out of gourd. Now, I don't think this film is gonna be the next DARK KNIGHT and change the face of superhero films as we know it but it looks like a damn good ATTEMPT at a competent film. Granted, I think the role of the Green Hornet has more than a little more of Seth Rogen in it than most people are comfortable with but, to be real, I just can't see the Green Hornet being all Bruce Wayne badass. My only exposure is to the old 60's show and I only watched that for Bruce Lee anyway.

But that's the thing he isn't as badass as Bruce, but he's a very very competant fighter. Even in the old show he could hold his own. In the comics he's more of a boxer/street fighter than a martial artist. He did go around the world training. He's Batman without the years of torturous training in every field. He's a detective but in the sense that he's a journalist/newspaper owner. He has the money and the gadgets but he's no ninja like Bats. That's what Kato's for. I just think he coulda toned the stupidity down a little. But I'll still wait for the next trailer to make a final decision. I'm just disappointed. I didn't want it to be “Batman Begins” dark, but I was hoping something along the lines of at least the Tim Burton “Batman.”
