Last we heard from Dustin Nguyen’s Vietnamese martial arts epic “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam” (aka “Lua Phat”), the actor/director was taking the film to sell to foreign types at the gathering in Frogtown. We don’t have any word on how that went, but with the film set for release in its native land this August, check out a new, final theatrical trailer for the period/martial arts/fantasy film. It looks like a cross between a Chinese Wuxia movie and a Western. Reminds me a bit of Scott Stewart’s “Priest”, actually.
You don’t have to be a longtime fan of Nguyen from his “21 Jump Street” days to appreciate that this thing looks mighty good. Really, really good. But hey, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Harry Ioki done grew up.
The plot finds Nguyen playing a warrior monk who comes to the rescue of a town overrun by evil foreigner types led by Roger Yuan. From the looks of it, he reunites with an ex-flame played by Thanh Van Ngo (his co-star in “The Rebel”) and much asskicking commences.
The film hits Vietnamese theaters this August, but no word on a Stateside release yet. We’ll definitely keep an eye out for sure.
