First Footage from the King of Fighters Movie

Are we dealing with a “Dragonball” situation here? I don’t know, that’s up to you kids to decide. But here’s your first look at some behind-the-scenes footage from Gordon Chan’s upcoming “King of Fighters” (via YouTube). The movie is based on the popular videogame of the same name, and is headlined by Maggie Q. and Ray Park. It’s apparently about a bunch of people who goes to a parallel dimension where they compete in fighting tournaments and try to take down an evil tyrant played by Ray Park. Or something. I’m not sure how the CIA guy fits in there, though.

It’s all very confusing, but then again, it is a movie based on a game, so I don’t suppose people were expecting grand storytelling. If anything, it looks and feels a lot like the “Mortal Kombat” movies, where the storyline is only there to serve the fight sequences. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I happened to dig the MK movies for exactly that.

The movie co-stars Sean Faris, Will Yun Lee, David Leitch, Maggie Q, Ray Park, Bernice Liu, Monique Ganderton, Sam Hargrave, Françoise Yip, and is directed by Gordon Chan.

IMDB.com has the film listed with a 2010 release date, but the production values doesn’t scream “theatrical release” to me, so you’re probably looking at a limited run in Asian cinemas before the film lands on DVD with a whimper.

    fark that Maggie Q isn’t even that good looking no offence:/

    But this being a Dragonball type movie? No way, the fighting looks sick!
    But the characters is Dragonball sucky like! WTF Terry Borgard? Mai!?? seriously WTF!

    but once again fighting looks sick, this looks better than legend of chun li.

    I’ll wait for beastly Tekken movie instead:)

    The trailer shows no resemblance to the video game it supposedly based on, what the heck! A fighting game is already lacking in the story department, the main element that makes them distinctive is the characters, if you can’t even get that right, why even bother.

    This movie is not going to be successful like The Legend Of Chun li if it fails it fails but for Tekken it could good.

    WTF was that? Why not just make a Fatal Fury movie? Less characters but several in this movie (Mai and Terry), easier story (REVENGE for the Bogard brothers on Geese for killing his father), and less of a chance of a COMPLETE CLUSTERF*CK!!! I mean interdimensional fighters? This isn’t MK! As a matter of fact, this isn’t even Street Fighter, so why are we going so sci-fi with it. KOF has realistic characters (Mercs, fighters, soldiers, killers, drug lords and criminals). Base it on that and throw in the prerequisite fights and you’re good. Stop trying to use sci-fi to explain away what are specialized martial arts techniques using Ki/Chi. Not even getting into the American playing Kyo Kusanagi (japanese name) or the fact that Mai (Maggie Q who is cute but…) doesn’t have her voluptious body, or that Terry Bogard is…a CIA agaent? Say what now? That’s like turning Ryu into a reluctant theif….oh wait they did. But the fights should at least be decent, and it does look a little better than both Dragonball Evolution and Legend of Chun Li, and DOA, and the original Street Fighter. But MK still holds a special place for taking the source somewhat seriously and providing some trully kick ass fight sscenes. DOA at least had a couple decent ones and some eye candy. Here’s hoping the Tekken movie is the dream come true for fighting game fans.
