First Look at Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, Plus New Teaser Poster

Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3 (2013) Movie Image

Gotta admit, I didn’t think Marvel would actually put The Mandarin in as ol Shellhead’s latest nemesis in “Iron Man 3″, especially given the film’s hefty Chinese Government backing. Then again, it’s not like Ben Kingsley looks all that, you know, Chinese, if this first official pic of Kingsley in full costume as bad guy The Mandarin (above) is any indication. I suppose they could turn the Mandarin into more of a poser, a wannabe who usurps the Chinese identity or some such. Anyways, below you can also check out a new teaser poster for “Iron Man 3″ (via Facebook).

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Besides Kingsley as the bad guy, “Iron Man 3″ stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Dale Badge, Jon Favreau, and Ashley Hamilton.

Shane Black directs the film, which hits screens May 3, 2013.

See and this is exactly what i thought they would do with him. Looks cool though.

  • Juggernaut

No complaints here. An overhaul of the character was definately needed if he was going to work on film. And that teaser poster is my new screen saver as of right now!

    • NCounter

Same it will replace the Avengers wallpaper))) Kingsley looks bad-ass, can’t wait to see the back story to his rings.

Agreed! I don’t think had they played the character as full on Chinese it would’ve worked well. Just came off as kinda campy, and too much of a throw back to the whole Socialist China thing that pretty much started the idea of The Mandarin anyway. I like idea of a Imperialistic Brit embracing Imperialistic Chinese culture as not only a business philosphy but as one for life. Much like Ozymansdias in Watchmen did with ALexander the Great.

so were all the chinese vanished that against non asian was chosen for asian character

I think they should used at least used an asian person as the mandarin rather then ben kingsley. Chow Yun Fat speaks enough english, although I don’t think he looks the part. I was thinking Ken Watanabe, but it’d be odd having a japanese person play a chinese person. maybe there wasn’t any asian person to fit the bill. They are not going to just put some random asian guy in the role of the main bad guy in a major release. Kingsley has played asian-ish before as Gandhi.

Again that would’ve been perpetuating the Chinese as evil thing and I’m sure they wanted to get as far away from that as possible. With Kingsley as you said he’s played Asian-ish before in Gandhi and most recently in Prince of Persia, and we can get the character without saying the country or culture itself is evil, just some guy who went overboard embracing it, hell for all we know he could be raised in China (which would be cool). Ken Watanabe would’ve been good though.

      • Juggernaut

Agreed on all points as usual.

      • http://www.grifiti.com Tin Hoang

Um, hate to say it, but the Chinese are evil. The truth hurts sometimes. Just look at our addiction apple products. If it weren’t for the chinese, we couldn”t afford to own them and therefore not able to feed the addiction. They perpetuate this evil cycle!

Yah, Ded. See, this way the Mandarin is still the villain, but it’s not REALLY a Chinese villain, so it’s okay. Gotta remember, Marvel/Iron Man 3 have a very hefty Chinese investment interest. You can’t piss off the Chinese. This way, they can skirt that issue. I wouldn’t be surprise if there’s a “real” Chinese hero to fight alongside Iron Man against this “fake” Chinese Mandarin. Etc.

Chairman Mao could come back from the dead to fight along side Iron Man to vanquish the Mandarin

I think Jet realizes his limitations. He had, what, 2 lines in “The Expendables 2″, and I swear, I couldn’t understand a thing he said.

  • X_p

im not impressed. kingsley is a talent no doubt about that but skirting the chinese issue is wack. even if they are being financed by the chinese. its not cool when they decide to change a characters back story. remember all the hub bub over making the ninja turtles aliens. its just kinda stupid to do it sometimes. i am SURE that there is one asian actor out there that woulda fit the bill but this just shows laziness on the part of the studio and director.

    • X_p

i mean for gods sakes the guys name is “THE MANDARIN”!!!!!
what other than “something chinese” can that mean????

      • http://www.grifiti.com Tin Hoang

        A mandarin orange?

  • baddog

Jet Li could have been cool. He was badass in the third mummy movie.

    • http://www.grifiti.com Tin Hoang

the problem is if he’s required to speak in English, it’s lights out.

lol, that’s funny. it’s good he knows his limitations. At least he’s smart about that.

  • Urizen

LOL, I like the idea of a white villain running around calling himself ‘The Mandarin.’ It reminds me of the WWE’s Lord Tensai, who is a villain with a samurai/ninja gimmick but he happens to be a white American dude who’s “obsessed with Japanese culture”. Also, I’m still waiting for that Fu Manchu movie starring Nicolas Cage.

    • M@rvel

      Ben Kingsley isn’t white….

      • Urizen

Yeah, I guess your right, he’s actually multiracial. But he’s still conspicuously non-Chinese.

      • he’s white

He passes the white guy test in eyes.

  • Johnny

Isn’t the character a Mongol/British blend even in the comics? I could have sworn I read somewhere that he’s not Han.
