First Look at Donnie Yen’s Painted Skin

In the Asian horror movie “Painted Skin”, Donnie Yen has to fight off a vampire-like woman who eats the skins and hearts of her lovers. Ouch. The last time we heard anything about the film, director Wilson Yip had been replaced on the $15 million dollar picture by Gordon Chan, but other than that, not a whole lot. Now, via a Chinese site, we have two images from the movie — actually, what looks like posters with teaser images of Donnie Yen and, we presume, the vampire chick herself.

The story, about the relationship between humans and a girl from the world of spirits, was adapted from the classic Chinese legends titled STRANGE TALES OF LIAOZHAI, which previously inspired a 1993 Hong Kong film also titled PAINTED SKIN (pictured), directed by veteran King Hu and starring HK faves Adam Cheng, Sammo Hung, Lam Ching-Ying, Joey Wong and Wu Ma. Heavy CGI postproduction will follow, with completion targeted for the end of next year.

Get painted October 2008.

I was really.really hoping this was a contemporary film and not a period piece. My heart has sunk because I’m not sure if it’s gonna include the kind of jaw dropping fight scenes Donnie has been delivering recently. Donnie Yen with long hair equals, expectations in despair.

This film got a bad rep as a vampire film w/ a vamp who devours hearts and skins, lol. Sounds a bit over the top, huh? We all know vamps suck blood and this is why I took so long to watch Painted Skin. This is NOT what the film is about. It is about a very attentive beautiful demon whose love sick over a human who is a married man. It’s not over the top either, very serious & powerful acting. It’s a beautiful romantic, fantasy film w/ some comedy. I wrote added the “full synopsis” at the infamous IMDb site when I read someone else listed it as a vamp movie. Man, I am so glad I did not pass this one up, and you know what, I’m going to watch it again tonight and probably every few months till I get burnt out! Forget Donnie Yen. I now have an official crush on Kun Chen.
