Yes, it’s a vampire movie. About a female vampire and her daughter. I guess that’s out of the bag, huh? For a while there, I wasn’t sure if the filmmakers were going to play coy with the whole vampire angle, but I guess they’ve decided to go full-vampire to market the film if this first UK trailer for the movie is any indication. Curious that this is the first trailer we’ve gotten from the film, though two clips were previously released. Better late than never, I guess.
So what are we to make of director Neil Jordan’s latest stab at vampire cinema? Remember, he previously helmed “Interview with the Vampire” with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. This time around, the vampire is Gemma Arterton. A major upgrade in sexiness if you ask me. (You did ask me, right?)
Eleanor and Clara, two mysterious and penniless young women, flee the scene of a violent crime and arrive in a run-down coastal resort. They try to find money and refuge along the tawdry seafront and in the dilapidated hotels. Clara, ever-practical, sells her body. She soon meets shy and lonely Noel, who provides a roof over their heads in his seedy guesthouse, Byzantium. Clara, always looking towards the future, turns it into a ‘pop-up’ brothel. Meanwhile Eleanor, the eternal schoolgirl, meets Frank, a kindred spirit who unwittingly prompts her to tell the truth about her life. She tells him that Clara is her mother; yet Clara is only a few years older. She says that she was born in 1804; yet she is just sixteen. She confesses that she must drink human blood to stay alive – and so must her mother. In the small, quiet town, people start to die. And the past that the girls have been running from for so long, finally catches up with them – with astonishing consequences.
“Byzantium” also stars Saoirse Ronan, Jonny Lee Miller, Sam Riley, Tom Hollander, Caleb Landry Jones, Daniel Mays, and is scheduled to hit UK theaters on May 3, 2013.
There is no U.S. release date yet. I get the feeling this might be going VOD/DVD Stateside.
