Don’t go all crazy on me now, Holmes fans, but I thought the first “Sherlock Holmes” was okay. I mean, it was adventurous and fun and Robert Downey Jr. really sold the character. And Jude Law was fun, too, I guess, but let’s face it, it was RDJ who sold that movie. The film itself, eh, I was bored during whole stretches, usually when Downey isn’t onscreen doing this Holmes shtick. Then again, I didn’t grow up on Sherlock Holmes, so that may have been a part of it. The film nevertheless went on to earn $524 million worldwide, and thus, you have a quick sequel two years later.
Guy Ritchie returns to direct the sequel, which once again follows the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.), and his longtime trusted associate, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), as they match wits with their arch-nemesis, the criminal genius Moriarty (Jared Harris). Rachel McAdams is said to have a brief cameo as Irene Adler, Holmes’ love interest from the first movie, but “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” actress Noomi Rapace will essentially replace her as the female lead.
