First Red Band Trailer For Ryan Gosling And Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives

Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives (2013) Movie Poster

The last time Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn got together, the result was 2010’s “Drive.” Now the duo has reunited for the Thai boxing actioner “Only God Forgives,” and if this first red band trailer is any indication, it feels so good.

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

“Only God Forgives” presents a similar feel as “Drive,” cool atmosphere, with a quiet overall aesthetic that is punctuated by acts of extreme violence. Gosling only gets one line here, but that line is “Want to fight?” Yes, Ryan Gosling, yes we do. There’s Thai karaoke, lots of intense staring, and violence and revenge. What more do you want out of a movie?

“Only God Forgives” opens July 19, 2013.
