It looks like Peter Berg’s passion project “Lone Survivor” is up and running, with the film’s cast of Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch, and Mark Wahlberg gathering, beards and all, on the New Mexico set, apparently standing in for Afghanistan in this case. (I don’t know whether the fact that your state can pass for Afghanistan is a good thing or bad thing if you happen to live in New Mexico, to be perfectly honest with you.)
“Lone Survivor” is the true story of a small unit of Navy SEALs that encountered a large faction of Al Qaeda terrorists in the mountains of Afghanistan during a mission to capture an enemy leader. Forced to make a life and death decision involving civilians, the unit find themselves under heavy fire, with Marcus Luttrell (played by Wahlberg) left as the only survivor. The battle in the mountains is only the beginning of the story; Lutrrell then had to survive by himself for weeks before he could be rescued by his comrades.
The cast also includes Taylor Kitsch as Mike Murphy, the man in charge of the SEALs unit (he’s not anywhere in the set pics), Ben Foster, and Alexander Ludwig.
Berg famously bowed to Universal’s wishes and directed the big-budget “Transfomers”-clone “Battleship” in order to make the smaller budgeted “Lone Survivor”. We’ll see if it was all worth it when the film arrives in 2013.
