Director Gareth Evans (whose name I sometimes mistaken with “Monsters” director Gareth Edwards — I mean, what are the chances that you’ll get two guys named Gareth directing movies at the same time?), is currently in production on his sequel to “The Raid”, and THR’s Heat Vision was on set and snapped some set pictures from the movie, along with the sequel’s plot.
After pitting Rama (played by Iko Uwais) against an entire tenement building filled with machete-wielding maniacs, what could “The Raid 2: Berandal” possibly offer that would top that?
We don’t know the answer to that, but now we do know the plot of the sequel. Check it out below, check it outers:
The sequel picks up right where the first film ends and follows the officer as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.
The “Berendal” in the film’s title, we’re told, means “thug”, which is appropriate since Rama goes undercover as one. As you’ll recall, at the end of “The Raid” only a few people survived, Rama being one of them.
Sony Pictures Classics will once again handle Stateside distribution, with Evans promising a sequel that’s “bigger, better and bloodier!”
That’s quite a promise, given that the original was pretty big and bloody. Not to mention insane. And out of its mind. But in a good way.
