First Squad: The Moment of Truth Anime Lands at Anchor Bay

“First Squad: The Moment of Truth” is a Japanese anime about Russians set during World War II, with Nazis as the bad guys trying to do that whole undead army raising thing that they are wont to do. Plus, did I mention Russian kids with superpowers? Yup, sounds like a recipe for carnage to me, too. The fun kind. The movie was written by Misha Shprits and Aljosha Klimov, and is directed by Yoshiharu Ashino, whose credits include ”Pokemon: Jirachi-Wish Maker” and “Piglet’s Big Movie”. Before you judge based on those films, check out the trailers for it below first.

Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast are a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

Not bad. As the saying goes, you can’t go wrong with Nazis and supernatural undead armies.

HeatVision reports that Anchor Bay Entertainment has picked up the film’s U.S. home distribution rights, with an eye toward releasing the film onto DVD and Blu-ray later this Summer.
