It’s been a while since Andrew Dominik wowed us all with “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”. After five years he’s reteamed with Brad Pitt for “Killing Them Softly”. This has been high on our list of hugely anticipated movies since we first heard rumblings a couple of years ago. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the first trailer has finally arrived, and from all appearances, lives up to expectations.
Based on George V. Higgins’ 1974 crime novel “Cogan’s Trade”, “Killing Them Softly” is the story of a Jackie Cogan (Pitt), a mob enforcer hired to take out a couple of punks who rob a mob-protected card game, and restore order in the wake of their actions. From this straight-forward set up, Dominik plays with genre conventions and expectations, bringing in the 2008 elections, the economic crisis, and much more. The trailer is funny, tense, and violent.
After all, you wouldn’t expect something usual and pedestrian from Dominik. And to go along with everything else he assembled a cast that, in addition to Pitt, includes Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Sam Shepard, Scoot McNairy, and Ben Mendelsohn.
“Killing Them Softly” opens on October 19th, 2012.
