Summit has released the first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi joint “The Darkest Hour”. Watching this offering I can’t help but think of “The Darkest Hour” as sort of “Red Dawn”, only with aliens invaders instead of Communists. There is a group of teens with rocket launchers who have to fight off an attack by outside forces, and from the looks of things, they’re pretty damn squirrely. At one point you’ll notice some sort of ray gun, or energy cannon type of homemade weapon. Maybe at some point they’ll yell, “Wolverines!”
I have to give the filmmakers behind “The Darkest Hour” credit for going a different way with the aliens. These aren’t the standard science fiction creatures that we’re used to, they’re some manner of energy as opposed to the corporeal, vaguely humanoid aliens of most films. This could be used to great effect. Or it could backfire, making it difficult for audiences to accept these disembodied, personality-less streaks of light as villains.
Directed by Chris Gorak and produced by Timur Bekmambatov, “The Darkest Hour” stars Emile Hirsch, Rachael Taylor, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Joel Kinnaman, Dato Bakhtadze, Yuriy Kutsenko, Artur Smolyaninov, and Nikolay Efremov.
“The Darkest Hour” invades theaters in 3D and 2D on December 23, 2011.
