It appears director Terrence Malick is serious about making up for lost time. After not directing a movie for 6 years post-2005’s “The New World” (he broke that spell with 2011’s “The Tree of Life” with Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain), Malick has now become rather prolific. “To the Wonder” is already in the bag (trailer below), and he’s already completing “Knights of Cup” with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman. And according to IMDB.com, he’s also currently in post-production on “Voyage of Time” featuring Brad Pitt and Emma Thompson, and already has another film in pre-production. Talk about making up for lost time!
But let’s get back to “To the Wonder”:
TO THE WONDER is the beautiful and acclaimed latest offering from Terrence Malick, the legendary director of THE TREE OF LIFE, BADLANDS and DAYS OF HEAVEN. The film is centred on Neil (Ben Affleck ARGO), a man who is torn between two loves: Marina (Olga Kurylenko QUANTUM OF SOLACE), the European woman who comes to United States to be with him, and Jane (Rachel McAdams MIDNIGHT IN PARIS), the old flame he reconnects with from his hometown. Neil’s doubts about his life and loves are reflected in the crisis of faith experienced by Father Quintana (Javier Bardem SKYFALL), who only sees pain and the loss of hope in the world. In TO THE WONDER, Malick explores how love and its many phases and seasons — passion, sympathy, obligation, sorrow, indecision — can transform, destroy, and reinvent lives.
As always with a Terrence Malick movie, it’s either a must-see or an avoid-at-all-cost for you kids out there. Malick is that much of an acquired taste. I think you know which camp I fall into. Your mileage may vary.
The film stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem.
Things get wonderful April 12, 2013.
