First Trailer For The Thing Prequel Thaws Online

Here’s your first look at the trailer for “The Thing” prequel, which tells the events leading up to the John Carpenter 1982 movie starring Kurt Russell. Don’t worry if you’ve never seen Carpenter’s movie, because it looks like this prequel is essentially the same movie — except with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton joining forces to replicate Russell’s character, flamethrower and all. Hey, at least Winstead is cuter than Russell, so there’s that.

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Kristofer Hivju, Jan Gunnar Røise, Jo Adrian Haavind and directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr..

The Thing thaws October 14, 2011.

Prequel, not a remake. This is what happened before the originalJohn Carpenter film.

I know it’s a prequel but COME ON!!! It is essentially the same scenario as Carpenters film. The Antarctica setting, the research team, the blood tests, the flame thrower, the dog kennel! Ugh!
I know that technically even Carpenter’s 80′s movie was a remake of the 50′s film “The Thing From Another Planet” and all but there was no reason to revisit this material. Unless they were going to show the aftermath of the Carpenter film. However, that would be awful because one of the best things about that movie was the enigmatic ending. All in all it looks like it will be a decent thriller but unnecessary.

I’m sure someone said the same thing about “Aliens” and most people loved that. Yes its the same situation but I think there’s more of them this time which changes things up just a bit.

          Sent on the go.

Yes, but can you honestly say that any of the talent behind this Thing prequel remotely compares to James Cameron, who already had The Terminator under his belt before he was entrusted with the Alien franchise? Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.? You gotta be kidding me. It’s already a bad sign that Universal is playing it cheap and hiring such no name hack video directors.

Awesome! Looks really good. Keeps the tone of the original but amps it up. I have a feeling the thing we met in the first movie is the last one left after the events here.

Let’s hope for practical effects. The originals gore is unbeatable.

Didn’t Swedish explorers find the first thing?

    • Juggernaut

Riiiiiiight! Hence the language barrier and the helicopter pilot from the beginning not being able to communicate the danger to the American crew and not being able to translate the findings at the destroyed station!

No, but “crazy Swedes” was running joke near the beginning.

      “Hey, you crazy Swedes!!”
“They’re not Swedes, Mac, they’re Norwegian.”

I can’t see it being easy to completely eyefuck an audience the way the original did, but hoping for something close
