William Friedkin is pretty damn legendary, with quite the prolific output in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, though you’d be hard-pressed to keep up with his recent works. The last movie of his that I saw was 2003’s “The Hunted”, one of those films that could have been really, really good, but I think got really butchered during editing. As it stands, it’s still pretty awesome if you like your action served with a great big helping of knife fighting. His most famous film remains “The Exorcist”, but that was a really long time ago.
2011 finds Friedkin hopping back into the saddle with the action-comedy “Killer Joe”. Unfortunately the film was completed in 2011 and has been sitting on the shelves since, and recently, it’s been slapped with an NC-17 rating. Check out the first trailer for “Killer Joe”, about a crazy cop being hired to kill the mother of some kids, to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m guessing McConaughey being slightly nutty and Juno Temple, as the object of his affections being slightly young, may be where the NC-17 comes in. I could be wrong, of course. The trailer looks pretty tame to me.
Starring Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, Thomas Haden Church, and thanks to its NC-17 rating, opening in very limited release July 27, 2012.
