“Argo”, Ben Affleck’s latest directorial effort, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend. Even before that, however, the film has generated a massive amount of hype. Nearly every critic that has seen the film can’t stop praising “Argo”, and the word Oscar has been tossed about freely in regards to Affleck and the rest of the cast. (Sure he already won one of the golden statues, but remember, this is Ben Affleck we’re talking about here, star of “Reindeer Games” and “Gigli”. Oh what a difference a few years and a handful of critically acclaimed films can make.)
The first TV spot for the film has arrived, and though a scant 30 seconds, the piece does a solid job of setting up the story and creating a ton of tension. That’s an impressive feat considering that this seems like a pretty complex story, one with lots of peripheral stories going on.
“Argo” tells the fact-based story of a CIA agent (Affleck) who smuggles six American hostages out of 1979 Iran by pretending to that they’re working of the crew of a science fiction film.
From everything we’ve seen, the period details look spot on, and Affleck has assembled an incredible cast. You’ve got John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, and more. Everything is in place for “Argo” to be a taut political thriller that you’ll remember.
“Argo” sneaks into theaters October 12.
