Apparently today is the day for releasing trailers featuring actors doing, er, questionable Southern accents. First it was Emma Thompson in the “Beautiful Creatures” trailer, and now it’s Cameron Diaz going way, WAY overboard with her “Texan” accent in “Gambit”. The film, a remake of the 1966 film starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, boasts a kooky script from Ethan and Joel Coen, but is directed by Michael Hoffman, just so you don’t get confused. Diaz’s ridiculous accent notwithstanding, “Gambit” looks like a goofy good time at the theaters. Or at least, on DVD.
An art curator decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss by conning him into buying a fake Monet, but his plan requires the help of an eccentric and unpredictable Texas rodeo queen.
“Gambit” also stars Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Tom Courtenay, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, Anna Skellern, and Togo Igawa.
The UK gets the film later this year (which is why you’re seeing a UK trailer first), but no word on a Stateside release date yet.
