Mads Mikkelsen was supposed to be Thor’s foe in Marvel’s upcoming “Thor: The Dark World”, but the actor opted to do Bryan Fuller’s “Hannibal” TV series for NBC instead. Hey, the chance to play Hannibal The Cannibal doesn’t come around very often, you know. That meant, of course, that the studio needed a replacement — and they’ve apparently found him in former “Doctor Who” star Christopher Eccleston, who has signed on to play the villain.
Eccleston, who counts a recurring stint on “Heroes” among his credits, will play Malekith The Accursed in the upcoming sequel. So who is this Accursed fella? He’s apparently the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim who will be making Thor’s life a tad little more miserable these days. He’s also been known to team up with Thor’s half-brother/nemesis Loki a time or two in the past.
Former “Game of Thrones” vet Alan Taylor will direct “The Dark World”, which will return Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, Anthony Hopkins as his poppa Odin, and, we’re told, Natalie Portman as Thor’s human crush, Jane Foster. Tom Hiddleston, of course, is also expected back as Loki. I’m hoping Loki won’t play too big a role in the sequel. Hiddleston is awesome in the role and all, but he’s already played the Big Bad in two movies, Marvel needs to give the character a rest before he becomes old hat.
Thor’s hammer does its thing one more time next year, November 8, 2013.
Until then, here’s what Malekith The Accursed looks like in the comics. I’m sure Eccleston’s looking forward to sitting for hours in the make-up chair for this one…
