Fox has officially announced that the latest “Planet of the Apes” movie, the prequel “Rise of the Apes” is currently being prepped for a Summer 2011 release, about the same time it plans to role out Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class”, another prequel to another Fox franchise.
As hinted by the title, “Rise of the Apes” will be a prequel of sorts that will allow the studio to reboot the franchise. It will chronicle the first rebellion by the apes, led by the smartest one of them all, Caesar, who gained his intelligence thanks to our dabbling in genetic engineering. See, this is why I told people cloning that sheep was a bad idea. Ha! Whose right? Me. But I digress.
Instead of guys in ape costumes, a lot of the apes will be CGI courtesy of Peter Jackson’s special effects house WETA Digital. This is different from the last time the Apes showed on the big screen, in Tim Burton’s “Planet of the Apes” remake with Mark Wahlberg and Estella Warren as an obscenely hot “primitive” woman.
“The Escapist’s” Rupert Wyatt will direct, with Peter Chernin producing.
