It’s official: Francis Lawrence is going to have his hands full with Katniss Everdeen and her two boy toys for the next, oh, 3-4 years or so. The director of “I am Legend” and “Constantine”, who just recently went into production on “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire”, has now agreed to remain on the franchise and also direct the two-part “Mockingjay” films as well.
“Mockingjay” is based on the third (and concluding) book in the Suzanne Collins young adult book series, that started with “The Hunger Games” and continued with “Catching Fire”.
“Catching Fire” takes place in the aftermath of “The Hunger Games”, with Hunger Games winners Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) taking a victory tour of the Districts, unaware that their victory has caused a stirring among the oppressed population, and that whispers of a rebellion against the ruling Capitol have gotten louder. This all gets pushed into the background when the two victors are once again sent into the Games to fight for their lives against other past winners.
“Mockingjay” would continue after “Catching Fire”, with a full-blown rebellion now in place and war against the Capitol raging. Much of “Mockingjay” is essentially a war movie, so it’ll be interesting to see how Lawrence and the writers tackle it.
“Catching Fire” is due out November 22, 2013, with “Mockingjay” parts 1 and 2 on November 21, 2014 and Part 2 for November 20, 2015, respectively.
