Francis Lawrence to Direct Snow and the Seven

Oh dear God, I can’t believe it’s actually happening. When I wrote about this movie a couple of weeks ago, I was sure it was all false rumors and BS, but it appears as if I was wrong. Now the Hollywood Reporter has officially confirmed the existence of such movie (though the plot is very different from the one I had originally read), and they’ve also said that “I am Legend” director Francis Lawrence has been named as a director. And the movie? It’ll be called “Snow and the Seven”.

The plot, which actually sounds more plausible (sort of):

The story, a fantasy adventure, centers on a British girl being raised in 19th century Hong Kong. When she realizes her destiny is to conquer an evil force, she must prepare to fight by being trained by seven Shaolin monks.

So it won’t be a futuristic sci-fi set “1000s” of years in the future, but rather 19th century Hong Kong. I suppose the possibility of Jet Li being involved doesn’t sound quite as ludicrous anymore, although I still suspect that Natalie Portman can’t possibly be involved.

And as always when it comes to a martial arts movie, Yuen Woon-ping’s name is being bandied about as the fight choreographer. I swear there must be 50 guys name Yuen Woon-ping out there, as many movies as he’s attached to at any given time…

The producers are looking at a possible 2008 start.

Oops, I just posted on the original mentioning of this movie. Yeah, its being made. Natalie Portman, on the Conan O’Brien show, confirmed being asked to do the role, and Jet Li’s involvment. However, she declined and said she had no interest in doing the part.
