Am I crazy or do we have a couple of remakes looming on the horizon that don’t look absolutely terrible? Hot on the heels of “Oldboy” remake trailer comes the first full clip for Sang-il Lee’s take on the gritty Clint Eastwood western “Unforgiven.” Judging from the trailer embedded below, this reimagining doesn’t look half bad.

Ken Watanabe stars as a samurai who decides to hang up his sword in order to enjoy the remaining years of his life. However, he is soon called out of retirement to perform one final job. Koichi Sato has been tapped to portray Gene Hackman’s character while Akira Emoto will tackle Morgan Freeman’s role. Jun Kunimura, Yuya Yagira, and Shiori Kutsuna also star in the upcoming remake.

As a fan of Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven,” I was a little anxious about Sang-il Lee’s version of the story. While I love Japanese cinema with a passion, I’m not the biggest fan of remakes, reboots, or reimaginings simply because there are a ton of original ideas out there that should be properly explored. However, this remake could be something special. I can’t wait to check it out.

The “Unforgiven” remake opens in Japan on September 13, 2013. The rest of the world will probably get the flick at some point next year. When you’re ready, the first full trailer for the film awaits your undivided attention below.

Todd was raised on a steady diet of Hollywood blockbusters, late-night Cinemax programming, and USA’s “Up All Night,” which may explain why his taste in movies is more than a little questionable. When he isn’t providing news and reviews for Beyond Hollywood, he can be found lounging lazily on his couch, perched in front of his television, or dwelling in places where direct sunlight can be easily avoided. He's happily married, in his 30's, and totally badass. If you'd like to reach Todd, you can follow him on Twitter or send him email/scoops to todd (at) beyondhollywood.com.

    That looks pretty damn incredible.

Funny since more than a few of the great westerns were remakes of Samurai films….full circle. Will definitely be looking for this.

I’m not sure there’s a “ton of original” material out there. Everything has been done already. The question is how can yours be done different or better.

    This looks awesome.
