Dust off your little G.I. Joe action figures and whatever other little trinkets you may have on your shelves, guys because the release date to “G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes” has just been moved up!

THR reports that Jon M. Chu’s flick is now scheduled to hit theaters on June 29, 2012 instead of the film’s original release date of August 10, 2012. And the reason behind the switch? That’s due to the fact that J.J. Abrams won’t be able to make the date for the release for his “Star Trek 2″ film in time so instead Paramount has given the date to “Joe”.

“G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes” is set to star Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Cobra Byung-hun Lee, along with Dwayne Johnson, Elodie Yung, RZA, D.J. Catrona, Ray Stevenson, and Adrianne Palicki. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

Meanwhile, the “Star Trek sequel that will likely begin production in January and either be dated for release for the fourth quarter of 2012 or summer 2013. Abrams hasn’t formally committed and hasn’t approved a script yet, but the studio has exercised its option on the cast and they will be ready when Abrams is.

UPDATE: The second “Joe” movie will no longer be called “G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes”, and will instead be called “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”. - Nix

Retaliation sounds good, the Script i was writing had the first one down as Gi Joe: Genesis and the sequel as Gi Joe: Revolution!

The ‘Retaliation’ tag not only sounds better, it makes more sense. From what I’ve read so far this film seems to be, at least in the casting aspect, a more JOE focused movie. ‘Cobra Strikes’ is a bit too close to “The Rise Of Cobra’ and also would imply that since in the first film was them rising the same members would be striking. That doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m curious as to who they are going to bring in to represent the Cobra side.

Agreed on name. As for who they’ll bring in, I don’t really see them completely droppinf Cobra Commander so they’ll find someone who doesn’t mind being in a mask the whole film. I’d like to see Destro again or we can go all out and have Serpentor. Luke Goss or Dominic Purcell are my choices for him.

That would be cool! Although from what it looks like they may be trying to ground this one a bit more in reality. One of the main complaints of the first movie was the hyper-realistic technology and scenarios in it. With a more military based setting and the tone a bit more realistic the second one could be a decent movie. I’d love to see Serpentor done in a way that he isn’t too cartonish and over the top but itt would be extremely hard to do that in my opinion.

They’ve pretty much done that in the new comics. I think the franchise needs a little sci-fi slant to it. Not as crazy as the suits from the first film but they need it to be slightly removed from reality but still be grounded, like Nolan’s Batman films,

            I’ll agree with that.
