G.I. Joe Retaliation Trailer Arrives to Save the Day

Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2012) Movie Image

Can the guy who gave us a Justin Bieber concert movie and two of those unGodly awful “Step Up” films save the “G.I. Joe” franchise? Well, that will probably depend on how you feel about Stephen Sommers’ first “G.I. Joe” movie. If you thought that film was kinda good and not complete garbage, then probably not. But if you thought that movie was kinda not good whatsoever and absolutely garbage, than yeah, even Jon Chu, the guy who did a Justin Bieber concert movie and two unGodly awful “Step Up” films can’t possibly do any worst. Find out what the Chuster has in store with the first trailer for “G.I. Joe: Annihilation”, now online for your viewing pleasure.

One word: Ninjas. So, so many ninjas.

And is it me, or is there very little Channing Tatum’s Duke in the whole trailer? He shows up briefly at the beginning, but once the fireworks starts, he seems to disappear completely. The film itself looks like a direct sequel to the Sommers original, but it’s interesting that so much of the original cast are gone. And it’s not like Chu is going “Star Trek” on us with a parallel world-ish story, either, so how does he explain Scarlett, Ripcord, and the rest just sort of … disappearing? Curiouser and curiouser…

The big cast includes Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Ray Park, Joseph Mazzello, Arnold Vosloo, Elodie Yung, Walton Goggins, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, RZA, D.J. Cotrona, and Matt Gerald.

The Joes save the day again June 29, 2012.

Cool Stories From Zergnet

First let me say, I never really had a problem with “Rise of Cobra”. For what it was, it was a decent enough movie. Having said that, “Retaliation” looks like it’s going to bazooka the first one right in the face!!! The Rock as Roadblock…..Jinx…..for all you purists, Snake Eyes with no mouth…..BRUCE FUCKIN’ WILLIS……and (as Nix pointed out) ninjas. So many ninjas. I haven’t been this excited about ninjas since the far side of Michael Dudikoff and David Bradley. Plus, it looks like they’re mixing the storyline of “G.I. Joe: Renegades” with the serious realism/tone and elements of “G.I. Joe: Resolute”. Not a bad combo if u ask me. Jon “Step Up” Chu is about to shut all of his naysayers up. I can’t wait to see this!!!!

Did you notice that Channing Tatum doesn’t seem to be in the trailer a whole lot after the attack sequence? I wonder if they killed him off in the movie… Dare I hope?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=114700493 Dominique Hatcher

I noticed. The message boards are abuzz with talk of his death, lol. C’mon though, he wasn’t THAT bad…….

        • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Nix

It wasn’t all his fault, but he didn’t exactly make the film any better.

          • Anonymous

He was just a charisma vacuum, and it’s not as though he had a “Glengarry Glen Ross”-caliber ensemble cast to begin with, which is odd since he wasn’t terrible in “The Dilemma” or doesn’t seem that bad in the “21 Jump Street” trailers

          • Lexavi80

I don’t know why I never liked the guy.

      • Juggernaut

If only all Channing Tatum movies had sequels that killed him off! Lol.

“REsolute” is freaking awesome, and “Renegades” is pretty good (art takes some getting used to) so yeah I can see those influences. The disbanded thing was done in the comics too, Tin Hoag, so it isn’t just the “A-Team” “Losers” “MI” take off that you’re feeling. Besides NONE of those stories has NINJAS!!! And Dom you didn’t get excited over the insane Ninja action of “Ninja Assassin”? Bust seriously yeah I didn’t hate the first one (mostly hated Snake Eyes’ damned lips!) and this looks to take what I did like and improve while getting rid of the crap that bogged the first film down. Bring it on!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=114700493 Dominique Hatcher

Oh don’t get me wrong, I loved the SHIT outta “Ninja Assassin”. I just meant that G.I. Joe comes from old school ninja action just like “American Ninja”. I like bloody, violent action as much as any red-blooded American male, but I prefer my ninja action with a little less slaughterhouse.

        • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Oh then you should check Scott Adkins out in “Ninja” as it’s a complete throw back to the Amercian Ninja flicks. Hell it coulda BEEN an American Ninja remake.Personally I like my ninja action gory as hell. Blame “Ninja Scroll”! That’s why I loved the anime “Basalisk”!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=114700493 Dominique Hatcher

Oh I’ve seen it. I’ve seen every Scott Adkins movie to date. LOVED that movie lol. I gotta admit, “Ninja Scroll” did turn me on to bloody ninja action lol. Hell, “Ninja Assassin” could have been NINJA SCROLL 2000 lol. I haven’t seen “Basilisk”, but I saw the live action adaption. Awesome. Kind of like X-Men+Ninja Scroll.

          • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Yeah “Shinobi: Heart Under Blade” had me saying, “Dresden why can’t we get a live action Ninja Scroll?” Lol. It was crazy. “Basilisk” is insane though. Me and my boy Virg watched it in a week. But yeah I’m on the Scott Adkins bandwagon. He’s still my choice for Iron Fist. I still have a few of his I need to see but the man is sick. Can you imagine him, Michael Jai White, and Mark Dacascos in a film with Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Jay Chou, and others?

I’m guessing that some or most of the non-returning cast are done away with during the purge alluded to in the trailer, so I wonder if we’ll get lookalikes and body doubles or cameos. But Bruce Willis apparently continuing his “I’m too old for this shit”/”RED” schtick plus The Rock plus Cirque de Soleil wirework ninja action… yeah…If ONLY Dudikoff or Bradley could’ve been fitted in for some “Expendables” style nostalgia

  • http://www.grifiti.com Tin Hoang

Looks like i’m in the minority here, but this kinda doesn’t look very good at all. The plot is what I’m not liking. Or is that something that should be ignored?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=114700493 Dominique Hatcher

Not ignored…..just less important. I mean, this isn’t Merchant Ivory here. The plot only has to be 2 things: 1.) Engaging enough to keep me interested/care about the characters between explosions and 2.) NOT SUCK.

Besides, what’s not to like? Zartan and Cobra have taken over. The Rock, John McClaine, Wonder Woman and Darth Maul have to stop them. Sounds like fun to me!

      • http://www.grifiti.com Tin Hoang

i know, i know. just seems like that framed and branded as traitors has been done a gazillion times. I’d almost like them remake an actual cartoon episode!

  • justjoe

That looks good. Less Tatum, supersuits and CGI, more Snake Eyes, ninja battles and heavy weapons!

  • MilkGod

The SUITS were corny in the first film but this film right hereeeeeeeeeee looks good!!!!!!! “THEY GONNA LEARN TODAY” (Kevin Hart Voice) COBRRAAAAA

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=114700493 Dominique Hatcher

Son, I busted out laughing with that Kevin Hart quote. My friends say it ALL the time.

  • Lexavi80

Ray Stevenson and Arnold Vosloo are going to be in this movie? Wow! Not bad!

I think a simple “they’re on a mission on the other side of the planet” will do with the missing characters.

  • Lexavi80

I gotta tell you.. Im impressed!! I actually liked what I saw.

I think you just see the original crew (except Snake Eyes) blown up and dead.

  • Danmillion99

    THIS…..LOOKS……..AMAZING. I am a kid all over again! I have a good feeling about this sequel…..wow….Snakeyes and Jinx…..am, am I DREAMING???? (O_O)

    • Juggernaut

I felt that way when I first heard of a G.I. Joe movie, then I watched the abomination that was “The Rise Of Cobra”! Lol. Still, I have to admit, this looks awesome. While I’m all for them getting rid of the JOE’s members (Duke, Scarlett, Ripcord, Heavy Duty and Breaker) all uncharismatic, all terribly acted, I will miss the ranks of Cobra. The name of the first film was “Rise Of Cobra” for a reason! They all came into their own and transformed into the villains that we knew and loved. Destro with the metal face, a Cobra Commander bent on total world domination and reliant on his mask entirely. Zartan using his mastery of disguise to secure himself a spot within the White House. They used all of their top tier enemies in the first one and it looks like only Zartan and Storm Shadow are returning. The inclusion of Firefly is cool. I hope that they beef up the Cobra ranks though. Maybe Xamot and Tomax will make an appearance. Any way you slice it this movie already looks waaaaaaaay better than the first one.

      • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

I dunno. That looked an awful lot like classic Cobra Commander between the “Prez” and Firefly man!
        Sent on the go!

  • Bubbahobrown

So Flint lives and Duke dies…can’t complain.
