Can the guy who gave us a Justin Bieber concert movie and two of those unGodly awful “Step Up” films save the “G.I. Joe” franchise? Well, that will probably depend on how you feel about Stephen Sommers’ first “G.I. Joe” movie. If you thought that film was kinda good and not complete garbage, then probably not. But if you thought that movie was kinda not good whatsoever and absolutely garbage, than yeah, even Jon Chu, the guy who did a Justin Bieber concert movie and two unGodly awful “Step Up” films can’t possibly do any worst. Find out what the Chuster has in store with the first trailer for “G.I. Joe: Annihilation”, now online for your viewing pleasure.

One word: Ninjas. So, so many ninjas.

And is it me, or is there very little Channing Tatum’s Duke in the whole trailer? He shows up briefly at the beginning, but once the fireworks starts, he seems to disappear completely. The film itself looks like a direct sequel to the Sommers original, but it’s interesting that so much of the original cast are gone. And it’s not like Chu is going “Star Trek” on us with a parallel world-ish story, either, so how does he explain Scarlett, Ripcord, and the rest just sort of … disappearing? Curiouser and curiouser…

The big cast includes Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Ray Park, Joseph Mazzello, Arnold Vosloo, Elodie Yung, Walton Goggins, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, RZA, D.J. Cotrona, and Matt Gerald.

The Joes save the day again June 29, 2012.
