Frank Miller Talks “Sin City 2″

25 February 2007

There had been a lot of rumors and talk about “Sin City 2″ running into trouble with ego problems between co-directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, but apparently that’s all out of the way, or at least according to Miller, who said this: “The script is largely done, and now we’re in that limbo zone where we’re casting and making script adjustments as we go.” He also mentions that “he hopes to be in Texas to shoot the film by late spring”, which is just fine and dandy with me. “Sin City” was a breathtaking ride through a never-before-seen ultraviolet nightmarish (and at the same time, dreamy) world built from a foundation of noir. There’s no Stopping “Ghost Rider”

20 February 2007

Man, color me “Shocked and awed and stupified” at the tremendous success of Nicolas Cage’s “Ghost Rider”. How exactly did this movie, that wasn’t even screened for critics, and that didn’t even look that good from the previews, end up #1 everywhere, domestic and foreign? In the movie, Cage’s character makes a deal with the devil. Did the producers of “Ghost Rider” did likewise? “Okay, you bums, you get 1 week of massive box office receipts, but then your soul belongs to me! Muwahahahahaha.” But wait, we’re talking about Hollywood producers here. You’d need to have a soul to sell it to the Devil, so…

“Ghost Rider” Scores $44.5 Million at the Box Office

19 February 2007

Holy mother of crap. I didn’t see this coming at all. First there were rumors (which turned out to be true) that “Ghost Rider” wasn’t being screened for critics, and then news that the producers were already looking at a sequel, and — well, let’s just say it: I thought this movie was gonna do good, but not great business. It is a comic book movie, after all, and that usually does pretty well in the first week. Not always, but usually pretty well, going by the last few years. But damn — $44.5 million in its opening week??? Holy Cripes. I didn’t see that coming AT ALL.

Aaron Eckhart Joins “The Dark Knight”

15 February 2007

Actor Aaron Eckhart (“Thank You for Smoking”, “Paycheck”) joins Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, the sequel to “Batman Begins”. This is actually old news, as various Internet sources have been claiming this for a while now, but it’s only now that the studios have confirmed it via Variety. Eckhart would be playing Harvey Dent, a Gotham City District Attorney who ends up scarred and becomes a schizophrenic villain. The character was played twice already, once as a black man (played by Billy Dee Williams, Lando Calrissian himself) in the original “Batman”, then as a white man (played by Tommy Lee Jones) in one of Schmacher’s neon glitzy Batmans.

Hollywood Hates Black People

14 February 2007

John Singleton, former wunderkind director of “Boyz in the Hood”, thinks the reason that Hollywood hasn’t given him the dough to make “Luke Cage” is because Cage is a black superhero, and Hollywood studios are skittish around a black dude in tights. Says Singleton about the delayed project to ComicBookMovie.com: “Well, because it’s a black superhero and so studios still, some studios, don’t understand that yeah, it is a black superhero but so what? He’s a superhero. That hasn’t been done yet. Like I said, unless it’s right, I ain’t gonna do it.” Tyrese Gibson (“2 Fast 2 Furious”) is attached to star as the titular brother with powers.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is the New Rachel Dawes in “The Dark Knight”?

13 February 2007

Crap. I was kinda happy when Katie Holmes got bamboozled from the role of Rachel Dawes in the upcoming Christopher Nolan “Batman Begins” sequel, aka “The Dark Knight”, but man, now there’s news that Maggie Gyllenhaal has been cast in the role vacated by Holmes. Ugh. I have nothing against Gyllenhaal, except that I find her incredibly creepy and, well, she’s just friggin creepy, okay? This girl belongs in B-horror movies playing the crazy old lady in the rickety house, not in a superhero movie opposite Batman. But anyways, this is one time I hope the casting news is wrong, but the guys reporting it sure has their finger on the pulse, and it’s probably true. Still — Yuck. Is it too late to get Katie Holmes back? Guys? Anyone?

Is Adrien Brody the New Hulk?

13 February 2007

By now you probably know that the Powers That Be are planning to not so much as make a sequel to Ang Lee’s “Hulk” as they want to remake it. Yes, that’s right. Lee’s version is barely 4 years old this year, and they are already moving forward with remaking it. That’s Hollywood for ya. Anyhoo, Eric Bana, the original Hulk, is obviously not coming back for some damn sequel to a movie that wasn’t that big of a hit in the first place, so who will they get to replace him? According to AICN, the actor is Oscar winner Adrien Brody of “The Pianist” fame. It’s all rumor, of course, but, well, now you have a name to go along with the potential new Bruce Banners. How do I feel about this? Bleh.

Is “Ghost Rider” Going to Skip the Critics? Maybe…

8 February 2007

It’s a $120 million dollar comic book movie starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, and the studio that made it might think it sucks so bad they’re going to skip the critics altogether and just dump the film into theaters on an unsuspecting populace. Maybe. The New York Post broke the story here: “Sony is dodging opening-day print reviews for “Ghost Rider,” which opens a week from Friday. Critics are being invited to the premiere the night before the opening as well as a “courtesy” screening on Friday, which means reviews will be buried in the Saturday papers.” Wow. We’re talking about a movie with a $120 million price tag here, kids, not some low-rent, $5-million dollar teen horror movie. What exactly does this say about the quality of “Ghost Rider”? I dare not opine.

Robert Downey Jr. Has the Tony Stark Look Down

6 February 2007

I’m not sure if Jon Favreau’s big-budget “Iron Man” movie is already shooting or what, but it looks like Robert Downey Jr., star of the upcoming Marvel comic book movie, is in full Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) mode. Check out the actor at Miami during the recent Super Bowl XLI between the Colts and the Bears, sporting the grey-sprinkled facial hair commonly associated with the Stark character in the comic books. And hey, is it me, or does Robert also look a lot more buff than he usually does?

The Flash is NOT Dead! Shawn Levy to Direct!

5 February 2007

Okay, so as it turns out, David Goyer may have left the Flash movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s dead. According to The Hollywood Reporter via here, Warner Brothers has just appointed Shawn Levy, whose last movie was the mega hit “Night at the Museum” with Ben Stiller, to direct the upcoming movie. Before he hit it big with “Museum”, Levy did “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “The Pink Panther”, which would lead you to believe “The Flash” might end up a campy superhero flick. Not so, says the article. While the movie won’t be a campy comedy, it also won’t be as dark as Goyer had wanted it. Apparently Goyer wanted a “dark-themed” Flash movie. Too dark for Warner.

The Flash is Dead. Damn.

3 February 2007

Man, this has been a bad week for comic book movies. First Warner killed Joss Whedon’s “Wonder Woman” movie, and now David Goyer has let it be known via his blog that Warner has also killed his involvement in the long-gestating “Flash” movie. Says Goyer about the demise of the Flash: “Well, I’ve been waiting a few months to relate this news — but I am sad to say that my version of The Flash is dead at WB. The God’s honest truth is that WB and myself simply couldn’t agree on what would make for a cool Flash film.” Oh well.

Joss Whedon Abandons “Wonder Woman”!

3 February 2007

Oh well, you sort of saw it coming, didn’t you? How long has Joss Whedon been “writing” that Wonder Woman script? It seems like a lifetime ago that geeks everywhere were geeking to the news that their main man was set to write and direct a live-action, big-screen version of the DC comic book heroine. And wasn’t it just yesterday that every actress in Hollywood was having their PR people work overtime to have their name associated with the role? Then all of a sudden Warner announces that they had bought someone’s Wonder Woman script (not by Whedon!) for some unfathomable reason, and the very next day Whedon walks off the project for good. Oh my, what is happening over there? Will we never see a Wonder Woman movie? Curiouser and curiouser…

Emily Blunt to Replace Katie Holmes in “The Dark Knight”?

1 February 2007

According to Cinema Blend, the Powers That Be at Warner Brothers are very keen to have British lass Emily Blunt (“Gideon’s Daughter”) step into the high heels left behind when Katie Holmes “left” (*cough*was fired*cough*) the “The Dark Knight”, which, according to reports, is already shooting in Chicago under an assumed name or some silly thing like that. Blunt would play the same role that Holmes played, that of crusading Gotham City Assistant District Attorney Rachel Dawes. This is, of course, just rumor, and probably nothing will come off it. Probably. But you know, if this is true, I’m pretty sure Gary Oldman is going to be the only American actor left in the entire cast. Take that for what you will.

Katie Holmes Pulls a Tom Cruise vis-a-vis the “Batman Begins” Sequel

30 January 2007

A while ago reports surfaced that the Powers That Be behind the upcoming Christopher Nolan-helmed “Batman Begins” sequel (aka “The Dark Knight”) had decided to dump Katie Holmes while still retaining her character from the original movie, and that a replacement was being looked for. Now Katie Holmes, perhaps getting the same advice that hubby Tom Cruise got when Paramount ditched him, claims she “turned down an offer to reprise the role of assistant district attorney Rachel Dawes”. Obviously this is politics and a face-saving measure. I highly doubt that Holmes “turned down” a chance to star in a guaranteed blockbuster (and thus hyping her own movie career) because of unresolved contract negotiations, just as no one believes Tom Cruise when he said he parted ways with Paramount on his own accord.

Is Katie Holmes Out of “Batman Begins: The Dark Knight”?

26 January 2007

Let’s admit it: The only people in this whole wide world who thought Katie Holmes wasn’t totally awful in “Batman Begins” was Katie Holmes, fans of Katie Holmes, or has last names that are Holmes or Cruise. Well guess what, Katie Holmes-in-Batman-Begins-haters, you just might get some relief, because here’s news that Holmes will not be in the “Batman Begins” sequel, titled “The Dark Knight”. According to Latino Review, Holmes’ character, Rachel Dawes, returns in the sequel, but Holmes has been dropped, and a search is now on for her replacement! Oh my oh my oh my. Methinks Tom Cruise’s Oprah couch hopping had something to do with it, don’t you?

Tyrese Gibson as Luke Cage, Hero for Hire?

25 January 2007

Luke Cage was a black comic book superhero codenamed Powerman from the early ’70s, created by the Archie Goodwin and first drawn by the legendary John Romita, Sr for the House of Ideas. Cage usually teamed up with another superhero called Iron Fist (basically a millionaire playboy, which struck a constrast with Cage’s “hood” creds) and “hired” themselves out as freelance superheroes to the downtrodden and poor. There have been rumblings for a while that Tyrese Gibson has wanted to bring Cage to the big screen, with John Singleton of “Boyz in the Hood” fame attached to direct. This would seem like a project right up Singleton’s alley, who has already proven that he’s kinda left that “Hood” stuff behind and embraced commercialism when he helmed the vacuous “2 Fast 2 Furious”.

Blade Babe Jill Wagner as Wonder Woman?

22 January 2007

Yet another actress has thrown her hat into the “Wonder Woman” lottery. This time it’s Jill Wagner, who lets it be known that she’s met with the producers of the upcoming big-budget comic book movie for the lead role. For those who don’t know who Jill Wagner is, she was the hot babe on the short-lived Spike TV version of “Blade”, but most people may have seen her (but just didn’t know it) as the Mercury car pitchwoman. Remember those Mercury commercials? Yeah, that’s her. Jill was sexy as hell in “Blade: The Series”, so why not as Wonder Woman? Of course it won’t happen, because Joel Silver, the producer, is way too smart to allow a relative unknown to headline his sure-to-be $100 million something movie, regardless of what writer/director Joss Whedon wants.

Rachel Weisz Replacing Angelina Jolie for “Sin City 2″?

18 January 2007

According to the dudes at Cinema Blend, an unnamed source has told them that Angelina Jolie is out of “Sin City 2″ and Rachel Weisz is in. The reasons seem to stem from Mother Angelina’s tireless schedule not allowing her to fit “Sin City 2″ in, and Rachel Weisz’s lack of a tireless schedule and Mother Teresa-like complex. Oh well. In “Sin City 2″, Weisz would play the role of Ava Lord, a sex bomb who leads our hero Dwight (Clive Owen in the original film) through a series of manipulations and that ol set-up for murder stuff that good guys always end up in in these pulp noir movies.

Wanna Know How “Spiderman 3″ Ends?

16 January 2007

Just kidding. I’m not gonna post how “Spiderman 3″ ends, but if you want to know, you can find out. Cinematical has posted it here, but because I didn’t read any further after finding out that what lies below would spoil the end of the movie for me, I can’t tell you if the spoilers are true or not, so be warned, click on this link at your own risk, etc etc. But seriously, why would you want to know how “Spiderman 3″ ends? If you’re a comic book geek, you probably already have a clue as to how it might end. But hey, to each his own. If you want to know, click on the link above. If you don’t want to know, and want to wait for the movie to come out to find out like the rest of us, don’t click on the link above. Got that?

Sophia Bush in Contention for “Wonder Woman”?

8 January 2007

So the guys over at IESB has the word from Sophia Bush herself (doing promo rounds for her remake of “The Hitcher”) that she may or may not be on the short list for Joss Whedon’s upcoming “Wonder Woman” movie. Or as she puts it: “Maybe, we’ll see.” Hmm, indeed, Sophia! Just don’t bushwhack us with an announcement that you’re Wonder Woman in the near future. (Get it? Sophia Bush? Bushwhack? Oh, I kill me.)
