Family Guy 300 Trailer Parody

28 August 2007

There’s South Park and then there’s Family Guy. The former is just a little bit (okay, a LOT) smarter than the latter, but the latter has its charms, too, and in its own way, it’s quite the clever little scamp. There was an episode a few years back where South Park ripped Family Guy a new one for being a one-trick pony — basically, every Family Guy episode is a series of lame narrative plot filled with completley off-center drive-by gags that usually begins with, “Remember the time when …” Yeah, it’s kind of lame, but it’s still great fun. Anyways, some clever kid put the trailer for the movie 300 to scenes from Family Guy, and I have to say, the results are pretty cool. I especially love the Hitler inspiration for the Leonidas speech. Priceless!

The 300 Spartans + 5 Uber Losers = 305 Spartans

25 June 2007

Remember the Zack Snyder movie about the 305 Spartans, based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller? Wait, did I say 305? Yes, that’s right. There were actually 305 Spartans that went to meet Xerxes as Thermypolae that fateful day, and while the rest fought Xerxes’ Immortals, five were tasked with guarding that goat path that could, if discovered, spell doom for the Spartan campaign. This is their story.

300 Spears 5 MTV Movie Awards Nominations

2 May 2007

Frank Miller’s 300 cleaned up at the box office, and now it’s preparing to spear the living bejesus out of the 2007 MTV Movie Awards, nabbing five nominations, including Best Movie, making it tops. Coming in a close second is “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” with four. Nominations for 300 includes: Best Performance for star Gerard Butler (Leonidas), Breakthrough Performance for Lena Headey (Queen Gorgo), Best Villain for Rodrigo Santoro (Xerxes), and of course, everyone’s favorite, Best Fight for Leonidas’ battle with the “Uber Immortal” aka that deformed Giant, who actually isn’t an Immortal, but nevermind. Continue for the rest of the nominations…

300 Continues Domination Overseas

10 April 2007

IMDB.com’s got some numbers for “300’s” overseas box office: Expanding into 6,500 theaters in 61 countries, the fantasy/history epic “300″ was the No. 1 film overseas over the Easter weekend, taking in $32 million and beating last week’s winner, “Mr. Bean’s Holiday”, which placed second with $30.1 million in 4,300 theaters. However, on a per-theater basis, the Roland Atkinson comedy led with $6,976 to 300’s $4,923. Both films are also expected to perform solidly today (Monday), a holiday in many countries.

Is “War in Heaven” the Next “300″?

28 March 2007

It hasn’t even made it onto retailer shelves yet, but Hollywood studios are scrambling to get a piece of the upcoming comic book series (ahem, excuse me, I meant, graphic novel) “War in Heaven”, which according to IESB, people are looking as being a possible “300″-like. So what’s it about: It’s “a Braveheart-like storyline that ultimately follows Lucifer as he leads a rebellion in Heaven. Battle sequences shows legions of Angels, including Gabriel and Michael, battling with their brother Lucifer and his army of fallen Angels.”

CGI Turtles Overthrow “300″ at the Box Office

26 March 2007

I didn’t think it was possible, but it’s happened: the CGI big screen adventure of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has overthrown Frank Miller and Zach Snyder’s “300″ at the box office. The return of the sewer-dwelling martial arts turtles took $25.45 million over the weekend, beating “300″, in its third week, by $5 million at $20 million and change. Mark Wahlberg’s America sucks movie “Shooter” came in third with $14.5 million in its opening weekend, followed by the children’s fantasty “The Last Mimzy” and the horror sequel “The Hills Have Eyes 2″, which came in with $10 million. Am I shock that the Turtles defeated the Spartans? One word: “Unfriggin’ believable.”

Can These Movies Take Down “300″?

23 March 2007

This weekend’s new slate of movies (six of them) are all hoping to take down Zach Snyder’s “300″, but will they? Let’s see… The film with the best chance would probably have to be the Adam Sandler movie “Reign Over Me”, but will Sandler’s audience of immature dorks pay good money to see their idol act all serious? I dunno. The next contender is “The Hills Have Eyes 2″, which is a guaranteed genre money maker. But genre films rarely perform that well against tough competition, so I’m going to say no on this one. “Pride” is the new Terrence Howard movie that you’ve seen 5 billion times before, and looks just as sugary and disgustingly predictable as the rest of them, so if this one topples “300″, I’ll be mad just on principle. Mark Wahlberg’s “Shooter” takes a shot at America, and will piss off some people, so I’ll no…

“300″ Conquers the World

19 March 2007

(Via The Hollywood Reporter) Thanks to smashing bows in five Asian territories as well as exceptionally strong holdover-market performances, “300″ dominated the foreign box office last weekend, battling its way to an estimated $15.6 million from 13 markets. The ancient epic took the No. 1 spot in each market it played. The fresh territories included South Korea ($6.3 million), Turkey ($1.5 million), Thailand ($917,000), Hong Kong ($730,000) and India ($582,000). The biggest of the holdover markets was Greece, where the film earned $2.5 million. The second-weekend tally was exceeded only by “300’s” record-setting opening weekend in the country. Upcoming this weekend are “300″ openings in such major territories as the U.K., France, Italy, Spain and Mexico. How you like them apples?

“300″ Continues to Slay at the Box Office

18 March 2007

The weekend box office gives a pretty good snapshot of America’s current moviegoing tastes. To wit: They love crazy action that is well done; they don’t think Chris Rock is as funny as mainstream news wants them to think he is; and Sandra Bullock can’t open a can of tuna, much less a movie anymore. And oh yeah, put enough famous people in a silly comedy, and they’ll go see it. In its second week, Frank Miller’s “300″ takes another $30 million, surpassing the $100 million mark in box office take as easily as Leonidas slaughters those pesky Persians. Coming in second was “Wild Hogs”, while the Sandra Bullock movie “Premonition” brings in $18 million, and the Chris Rock’s “I Think I Love My Wife” scrapes the bottom with $5.7 million. This proves my theory that Chris Rock is not, and has never been, the funniest man in America. In fact, I don’t find Chris Rock the funniest man in my living room when there’s just him and I.

Iranians Call Shenanigans on “300″

16 March 2007

I know this is going to shock you, but it’s true: Arabs, in particular those of Iranian descent, are majorly pissed off at the portrayals of the Persians in the Hollywood movie “300″, a tale set in 480 BC, when the Persian empire attempted to conquer Greece, but got their butts handed to them instead. (In case you were wondering why, Persia equals Iran. Same difference. Back then, now, etc.) Not only is that nutjob Iran calls a President calling the film “cultural propaganda” (Iran bans all Hollywood movies, in case you were also wondering), but Iranians everywhere (but mostly in Canada, of course) are doing various things to show Warner, the company that produced “300″, that they’re mad as hell and they’re, well, going to take it, but they’re going to whine real loud. Some of the “protests” are funny, such as the dorks demanding Warner apologize for the film. Hey, genius, it’s a friggin Hollywood movie. When was the last time Lalaland did anything that resembled the “truth”? Get over it!

Will “300″ Lead the Way for “Watchmen”?

14 March 2007

Nutcase comic book writer Alan Moore’s 1980s limited series “Watchmen” has been in development hell longer than, well, just about any movie I’ve heard of. It’s chewed out two possible directors, “Pi’s” Darren Aronofsky and “United 93’s” Paul Greengrass, and now “300″ director Zach Snyder, flushed off the success of “300″, has a $150 million dollar idea for the “Watchmen” movie. But the question is, “Will the studio go for it?” According to Reuters, the studio is looking at something under $100 million — then again, that was before Snyder’s $60 million dollar “300″ blew the roof off the box office over the weekend. Will Zach Snyder get his wish, and put “Watchmen” into production by Summer 2007? Time will tell…

“300″ Racks up a $70 Million Bodycount

11 March 2007

Xerxes, Boy King of the mighty Persian empire, learned to his dismay that you can’t keep a good Spartan or 300, give or take, down. Zach Snyder has a mammoth hit on his hands, with “300″ selling out movie theaters all across the country, and recording one of the biggest pre-order spree of all time. The Frank Miller story racked up an impressive $70 million in its weekend debut, surpassing the predicted $50 million opening by a whopping $20 mil. I guess audiences didn’t find it odd that a King of Sparta, in Ancient Greece, was speaking with a heavy Scottish brogue. Hey, works for me.

300 Seconds of “300″ Video Clip

9 March 2007

Over at MTV.com, those whipper snapper rebel rousers finally do something worthwhile, and have posted 300 seconds of Frank Miller’s “300″ for your perusal pleasure. It’s a groovy little clip, over 5 minutes long for those of you with math deficiencies, and shows the Spartans as they take on Xerxes’ elite guards, the Immortals. It’s one bad ass little clip, and if it doesn’t get you jazzed for opening night of “300″, you have no pulse, and must dine in hell! Or somesuch. Here’s what you do to see the clip…

Frank Miller on “300″ and “Sin City 2″

7 March 2007

Do I even have to keep saying it? All my daily readers (all 6 of you) know that I am insane about Frank Miller’s upcoming (in 3 days!!!) “300″ movie adaptation of his graphic novels. I love the graphic novels, and from everything I’ve seen of the movie, I know I’m going to be squirming in my seat with giddy delight, the way fat kids squirm with giddy delight when they hear the ice cream truck coming. Anyways, Moviehole recently did an interview with Frank Miller, and he talked extensively about “300″ and a little bit about “Sin City 2″. I would have liked to know more about “Sin City 2″, but what the hell, you can’t look a gift horse in the mouth. (Did I even say that expression right? Oh whatever.) Read on…

Another Reason to Line Up for “300″: Lena Headey

7 March 2007

As if you needed one more, but just in case you aren’t already sold on lining up for the opening day of Frank Miller’s “300″, then here’s another one: Lena Headey is sexy. Plus, she’s got that bad girl vibe about her going on. The woman is tatted up from arm to back, and they look good, too. Normally I don’t appreciate women with tattoos, but they look quite good on Lena. Here’s the other thing about our lovely actress: I don’t know if she’s thought about it, but with “300″ and the upcoming “Sarah Connor Chronicles”, Lena Headey will have secured her place in the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere. Which means that no matter what she does from now on, Lena will always be the Queen in “300″ and, probably more importantly, Sarah Connor. I have no clue rather that is a good thing or a bad thing…

9 More Clips from “300″

20 February 2007

“300″ is still next month, but there are nine more clips for you to get a glimpse of the glory that is Frank Miller’s “300″. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, “300″ concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world’s first democracy. Thanks to reader “Jaks” for cluing me in on the existence of the clips. Peace out! (As the kids say…)

Another “300″ Clip Online

18 February 2007

Frank Miller’s “300″ doesn’t open until March 9th, but Yahoo! Movies is hosting a pretty groovy little clip online where King Leonidas of Sparta (Gerard Butler) gives a badass speech fit for a badass king such as himself. It’s all kinds of badass and should get your blood boiling. No action, no flying arrows or thrusting spears, but very cool. Check it out here, and then mark your calendars for “300″ to hit screens with enough arrows to “blot out the sun”.

Watch 3 Clips from “300″ Online

15 February 2007

Zach Snyder’s “300″ doesn’t open until March 9, but you can check out three clips (about a minute each) from the movie that has been posted online at Moviefone. The three clips include: “King Leonidas gives the Persian emissary a taste of Spartan diplomacy. Xerxes is not going to like their response!”, “The Spartan ideal of ‘a beautiful death’ in battle is revealed as scouts first view Xerxes’ enormous army landing on Greek shores,” and “Queen Gorgo lends her strength to a grave King Leonidas in this tender scene.” Check out all three clips here.

TPTB Pondering a Sequel to “300″? Say What?

13 February 2007

Via the groovy guys over at Cinema Blend, here’s news that “300″ producer Mark Canton is apparently so excited about the upcoming Zach Snyder adaptation of Frank Miller’s “300″ that he’s already talking about a sequel. As the CB guys correctly points out (and as my college semester of Warfare in Greek History confirms), how the hell are you going to make a sequel to a movie where everyone — well, I won’t spoil it for people who might not know the history of the 300 Spartans, but suffice it to say, it ain’t pretty, and it don’t leave room for no stinin’ sequel. Then again, there doesn’t seem to be any room for a sequel to “The Departed”, either, and The Powers That Be still insists on making one, or two, or a couple half dozen. Stupid Hollywood.

“300″ Gets Yet Another Cool Poster

24 January 2007

A reader sent in this umpteenth cool poster for Frank Miller’s upcoming “300″. What number does this make, 500 posters for “300″? Get it? 500 for 300? Oh, I slay me. But get ready to be slain by the Spartans as they kick serious Persian ass on March 9. Can you tell I’m excited? I’m not sure if this poster was taken from Miller’s graphic novels, but it could be. Most of the posters, like the movie, could be taken directly from Miller’s books and transplanted to the big screen with live actors. The guy was that revolutionary with his artwork and storytelling abilities. Likewise with “Sin City”, which was nearly a carbon copy of the man’s works. Miller is that good.
