Movie Preview: “Hannibal Rising”

15 January 2007

French actor Gaspard Ulliel steps into the humongous shoes of Anthony Hopkins as young Hannibal Lecter, aka Hannibal the Cannibal, the mad genius serial killer who would terrorize Jodie Foster and Edward Norton, in the upcoming “Hannibal Rising”, Thomas Harris’s prequel to his popular Hannibal character. What makes me have faith that this may be good is the attachment of Harris’s name as writer of the novel and the screenplay. That in itself should mean something good.

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Alpha Dog, Arthur and the Invisibles, Primeval, Stomp the Yard

12 January 2007

Justin Timberlake tries to get in sync (get it?) with crime in “Alpha Dog”, black college kids “Stomp the Yard”, Dominic Purcell takes on “Primeval”, and “Arthur and the Invisibles” will probably not be invisible to the kids. Personally, I’m intrigued by the notion of Justin “Fedora wearing dork” Timberlake’s performance in “Alpha Dog”; it’s supposed to be really good. Then again, I’m a genre man, so Purcell in “Primeval” would probably be on my list of weekend screenings.

“Hot Fuzz” Trailer and Stills

12 January 2007

From the same poeple who brought you “Shaun of the Dead”… Well that’s really all you need to know, isn’t it? Instantly you know three things: It’s gonna be a comedy, it’s gonna be funny, and it’s gonna have, at least, Simon Pegg in it. Then you throw in Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent, and Paddy Considine, and get a script written by and directed by Edgar Wright, and that’s a first-rate Euro cast and crew there, bub. So what is it about? “London’s top cop gets sent to a sleepy little town where he suspects a series of “accidents” are really murders.” Sounds like fun. Check out the stills below and visit here for the trailer.

“Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End” Promo Stills

11 January 2007

With just four months until its impending release, the powers behind “Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End”, has started dishing out the promotional stuff to the usual places. These promo posters are from AICN, and since the posters weren’t yanked a second after being posted (studios eyeball AICN for “booty” like hawks), I think I’m safe in assuming that the studios sent them out themselves under the guise of “spies”, etc. In part 3, “At World’s End”, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom goes in search of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who was “eaten” by the Kraken at the end of “Dead Man’s Chest”. And oh yeah, Chow Yun Fat plays a Chinese pirate. Arghhh, ’tis sounds cool!

“Black Snake Moan” Gets a Trailer, Stills

10 January 2007

In “Black Snake Moan”, Christina Ricci plays a slutty Southern white girl who, well, sluts it up a lot, and Samuel L. Jackson plays a old black guy who crosses paths with her, and decides he needs to cure her of her “wickedness”. He does this by chaining her to a big ass chain while she’s half naked. Yeah, it’s that kind of movie. Looks funny as hell, too. (”I was gonna tell you about that.”) From the director of “Hustle and Flow”, and the soundtrack looks to be pretty incredible stuff. Check out the trailer and official site at the movie’s Myspace site here, and feast on glossy stills of a half-naked Christina Ricci below.

“Stomp the Yard”: Come for the Dancing, Stay for the Laughs

7 January 2007

Is there any doubt that the new movie “Stomp the Yard” is basically “You Got Served” The Sequel? Or the fact that it’s going to follow every “urban movie” cliche (gangs, troubled youth, street violence) and sports movie cliche (the kid who can’t compete because of a past trauma, the music-filled training montage, the Big Game)? “You Got Served” had me laughing my ass off at the absurdity of what the filmmakers were trying to shove down our throats. I get the feeling “Stomp the Yard” is going to be equally funny. Unintentionally, of course.

“Blood and Chocolate” Movie Stills

5 January 2007

We recently got a boatload of stills from MGM promoting their upcoming vampire/romance flick “Blood and Chocolate”. Just think “Underworld” without Kate Beckinsale, and then add in Romeo and Juliet, but with fangs and claws. The film stars Agnes Bruckner as a werewolf who falls in love with human artist Hugh Dancy, much to the chagrin of werewolf alpha dog Olivier Martinez. The trailers are selling the film to the same crowd that went for Beckinsale’s “Underworld”. Check out some glossy stills and trailer for the movie.

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Code Name: The Cleaner, Freedom Writers, Home of the Brave, Thr3e

5 January 2007

Cedric the Entertainer is Blambo (that’s black Rambo to you kids) in “Code Name: The Cleaner”, Oscar winner Hilary Swank plays yet another white woman trying to save black kids yet again, Jessica Biel gets shot up in Iraq and returns home in “Home of the Brave”, and “Saw” clone “Thr3e”, well, clones “Saw” right down to the commercials. I mean, come on, they’re not even trying fer Christ. For the kiddies, there is something called “Happily N’Ever After”, a CGI animated movie about, “When the wizard in charge of Fairy Tale World goes on holiday, Cinderella’s wicked stepmother takes over the land.”

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Black Christmas, Children of Men, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

29 December 2006

Hollywood remakes another horror movie, this time 1974’s “Black Christmas”; meanwhile, Clive Owen runs from “Children of Men”; and something called “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”, which is about “a gifted perfume-maker in 18th century Paris who is driven to murder by an obsessive search for the ultimate irresistible scent.” Or something. In limited release, you have a slightly better selection, including Cate Blanchett in “Notes on a Scandal” and Pittsburgh hater Sienna Miller in “Factory Girl”. If you’re in a mood for horror, go for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth”.

Movie Trailer: Blood and Chocolate

22 December 2006

Agnes Bruckner is a hot teen werewolf babe and Olivier Martinez is the hot adult werewolf dude who wants her to be his wife. Hugh Dancy plays an American artist who romances werewolf babe. It’s “Underworld” crossed with “Romeo and Juliet” set in an Eastern European country. Written by genre vet Ehren Kruger (”The Ring” movies) and directed by “Bandits’” Katja von Garnier. Should be fun times.

22 December 2006

The Italian Stallone punches back in “Rocky Balboa”, Ben Stiller gets silly in a “Night at the Museum”, Matt Damon and Robert De Niro badmouths the CIA in “The Good Sheperd”, and Matthew McConaughey grins his way through the sappy “We Are Marshall”. Movie Preview: “Grind House” (and Teaser Trailer)

21 December 2006

Robert Rodriguez (”Sin City”) and Quentin Tarantino (”Kill Bill”) join forces for “Grind House”. So what’s it about? Here’s the official line: “Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez present two full-length movies in a new horror double feature. In Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” Austin’s hottest DJ, Jungle Julia, sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna an Arlene. Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike, a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away. In Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror,” two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex-boyfriend Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.”

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Eragon, Charlotte’s Web, The Pursuit of Happyness

15 December 2006

Dragons ride again in the fantasy “Eragon”, which seems to be getting mediocre reviews so far; Dakota Fanning acts opposite a pig in the live-action version of “Charlotte’s Web”; and Will Smith can’t spell in his “The Pursuit of Happyness”. In limited release, you have Jude Law and Juliette Binoche getting it on on the side in “Breaking and Entering”, the latest from that “The English Patient” guy; George Clooney is “The Good German”; Beyonce and company invades our dreams as “Dreamgirls”; and Jessica Biel loses a hand in “Home of the Brave”.

Movie Preview: “Curse of the Golden Flower”

15 December 2006

Via Joblo, here’s a nifty little scene from the new Zhang Yimou martial arts epic “Curse of the Golden Flower”, which features ninjas attacking a building and getting ambushed themselves in turn. Kinda cool. The film stars Jay Chou (”Initial D”), Chow Yun Fat (the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean 3″), and Gong Li (”Miami Vice”), who returns to working with Yimou for the first time in a long while. The film is about “the ill-fated romance between an imperial bodyguard and a prince takes the lovers on a dangerous journey where royal family secrets are revealed.” Doesn’t sound all that hot, but the video and the pictures below do show that this is an actual martial arts movie, and not some wacky road movie.

Alicia Keys in “Smokin’ Aces”

13 December 2006

In the movie “Smokin’ Aces”, R&B hottie Alicia Keys plays a cold-blooded assassin chasing a magician con-man who has a price on his head put there by the Vegas mob for turning snitch. Everyone ends up at a posh hotel where they attempt to take out the magician for the $1 million contract. From the trailer, it definitely looks like one of those “Lucky Number Slevin”-type movies — you know, violent as all get-out, but tongue-in-cheek as well. Plus, Alicia Keys looks really hot in it, or maybe it’s just my predilection for well-armed attractive women. Expect “Smokin’ Aces” in theaters January 2007. It co-stars everyone from Ben Affleck to Ray Liotta. And did I mention it’s probably violent as hell to boot?

“Letters From Iwo Jima” Trailer and Stills

12 December 2006

Set to be released late December 2006 as the second half of his Iwo Jima two-parter (the first half being “Flags of Our Fathers”), Clint Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima”, about the World War II battle for the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, has been garnering a lot of awards lately, more so than “Flags”. While “Flags” focused on the American side of the battle for Iwo Jima, “Letters” will focus on the Japanese side. The film stars Ken Watanabe (”The Last Samurai”) and is in Japanese with English subtitles. Eastwood directs both movies, with Iris Yamashita scripting “Letters”.

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Apocalypto, Blood Diamond, The Holiday, Unaccompanied Minors

8 December 2006

Mel Gibson strikes back, Leonardo DiCaprio does some weird accent, Cameron Diaz sours the holidays, and kids have fun without adult supervision. Four new movies, each one vastly different from one another, which means anyone who wants to see something has a movie just for them. The most intriguing of them all is no doubt Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto”, his second movie shot in a dead language about the Mayans and what happened to them. “Blood Diamond” looks to be a decent action thriller with a dash of social junk, while “The Holiday” is strictly for guys looking to make out with their first dates. And should I even bother with “Unaccompanied Minors”?

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj, The Nativity Story, Turistas

1 December 2006

American “Turistas” run afoul of killer South Americans, Jesus goes on a trip in “The Nativity Story”, and “Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj” returns minus Van Wilder. Meanwhile, in the indie scene, Morgan Freeman cashes out with “10 Items or Less” while Lucy Liu indulges in “3 Needles”. So you have a generic teen horror flick trying to cash in on the torture genre via “Hostel” and “Saw”, a comedy sequel, and Jesus. Not exactly the cream of the crop, but depending on your taste in movies, you should have something good to sink your teeth into this week. Or at least something really sticky that gets behind the teeth and you can’t quite get at it with a toothpick.

The case will become an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Edwards, and Brian Cox and is due in 2007.

Your Weekend Movie Preview: Casino Royale, Happy Feet, Let’s Go To Prison

17 November 2006

James Bond gets a face lift, a couple of years younger, and returns in “Casino Royale”; animated penguins do comedy in “Happy Feet”; and the one alternative this week, the probably-too-adult-even-for-adults comedy “Let’s Go to Prison”, which has got to be the best movie title since “Snakes on a Plane” in a long while. In limited release, Emilio Estevez comes out of his cave to write, direct, and star in “Bobby”, and a ton of other stuff no one will see, including Greg Kinnear in “Fast Food Nation” and Christopher Guest’s adlib-a-thon “For Your Consideration”, starring the scame crew that was in his last 5 movies.
