LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD King of the Net? I dunno…

30 April 2007

So there’s this report on The Hollywood Reporter that the Bruce Willis sequel “Live Free or Die Hard” (known as “Die Hard 4.0″ overseas) is leading the way in Internet coverage via movie and entertainment blogs. I gotta say, I don’t know about that. Speaking as someone who runs a blog, and covers movies and entertainment, while “Live Free or Die Hard” is on my radar, it’s nowhere near the insane anticipation I have for “Transformers” or even “Spider-Man 3″. I mean, I wanna see it, but I’m not even sure if I’ll make it to the theaters to do that; but “Transformers” and “Spider-Man 3″? I’m there on opening day without a single shred of doubt. Then again, maybe I’m just different than the rest of my bloggers…

Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott Revises NOTTINGHAM

30 April 2007

Apparently Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott really enjoys working together — or at the very least, they seem to think the other guy brings them luck, because Variety reports that they’ve teamed once again (having worked previously together on “Gladiator” and “A Good Year”) for “Nottingham”. The film is being described as a revisionist look at the legend of Robin Hood, where the Sheriff of Nottingham is a law and order type good guy trying to put an end to the crime spree of criminal Robin Hood, who robs from the rich and gives it to himself. One supposes “Nottingham” is on the slate once the duo finishes up “American Gangster”.

Elisha Cuthbert’s CAPTIVITY Gets a Trailer

30 April 2007

Usually when a movie launches a controversy, it’s a good thing — at least for the bottom line. But for some reason I don’t think that’s the case with the new Elisha Cuthbert thriller “Captivity”, which got in a ruckus when the producers had to pull a billboard of the movie for being “too disturbing”. Anyways, “Captivity” finally gets a trailer. In the film, a fashion model (Cuthbert) and a chauffeur are kidnapped and held hostage in a small room by a serial killer. While the madman methodically terrorizes them, the victims draw strength from each other and fall in love.

Lucy Liu’s RISE: BLOOD HUNTER Gets a Movie Poster

30 April 2007

Lucy Liu’s “Rise” has been around forever, and I’ve only heard sporadic information about it. It’s almost as if the studio is trying to purposefully bury it, which might just be what they’re going to do. The film is being listed as getting a limited release on June 1st, 2007, but I’ll be shock if I see any ads for this as it misses a theater near me. Then again, I could be wrong. Anyways, the movie has since been retitled “Rise: Blood Hunter”, and it’s got a new poster. But if you look at the poster, it sure looks a lot like Kate Beckinsale’s “Underworld: Evolution” movie poster. They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery; in the movie business, movie poster imitation is just a lame attempt to trick Blockbuster renters to pick up your movie.

DISTURBIA Continues Box Office Domination

29 April 2007

Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel couldn’t push the teen thriller “Disturbia” from the top spot, where it continues its reign for a third consecutive weak in what is being called a weak month for the American box office. The teen ghost movie “The Invisible” landed at #2 with $7.6 million in its debut, while Cage and Biel’s “Next” landed in third with $7.2 million, also in its debut. Two other new films, the Steve Austin starrer “The Condemned” barely scratched out the 9th spot with $4.0 million, while the Jamie Kennedy comedy “Kickin’ It Old Skool” moonwalked its way into a lowly $2.8 million in 11th place. Of course, once “Spider-Man 3″ opens next week, none of these guys will get any action, so I guess it’s academic.

Because You Demanded It: BLOODRAYNE 2 Trailer, Plot

29 April 2007

What, did you demand a “Bloodrayne 2″ because the first one was just so gosh darn good? Oh well, whether you wanted it or not, it’s here. Uwe Boll’s fiendish masterpiece, “Bloodrayne” (originally starring Kristanna Loken) gets a sequel in “Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance”. Boll once again directs from a script by Christopher Donaldson and Neil Every, but this time Natassia Malthe (”Elektra”) takes over the role of half-human, half-vampire vampire killer Rayne, who must journey to the Wild Wild West of America to battle vampire cowboys led by — gasp! — a vampiric Billy the Kid! No, I absolutely, positively kid you not.

Video Clips from 28 WEEKS LATER Online

29 April 2007

I have to admit it — the more I see and hear about “28 Weeks Later”, the more I’m looking forward to it. Granted, it’s not the level of “Transformers”-esque anticipation, but it’s pretty close, and that’s why the film should do reasonably well on its opening weekend. Yahoo! Movies has some exclusive clips online from the movie. There are a couple of cool ones, but my favorite is the “Stay Down, Stay Fast” one, where Jeremy Renner’s character leads survivors out of the city, only to get stalemated by not zombies, but Army snipers! See all the clips for yourself here.

Chris Evans and Keanu Reeves in THE NIGHT WATCHMAN

29 April 2007

IGN reports that Chris Evans has join the cast of “The Night Watchman”, which will star Forest Whitaker as well as Keanu Reeves, who plays an L.A.P.D. detective who gets framed. Evans will play the cop put in charge of the investigation. The movie, set in the much malign world of the L.A.P.D., will be written and directed by David Ayer, who is quickly becoming the go-to guy for “bad cop” movies like “Training Day” and “Harsh Times”. The film will start shooting May 21st in Los Angeles. Chris Evans is a busy boy; besides “The Night Watchman”, he’s got “The Fantastic Four” sequel and “Sunshine” coming in 2007 alone.

Lindsay Lohan in GEORGIA RULE Images

29 April 2007

Sometime last year there was this post about Lindsay Lohan being a very, very bad girl on the set of her new movie “Georgia Rule”. (And I’m not even talking about her acting up so much that the producers put out an ad to chastise her.) So now every time I hear about the movie, I always think of that post, and rather Lindsay was doing the dirty deed or not during the filming of that film. I like to think that she was, if only because it helps with the fantasy element. A dirty Lindsay Lohan is so much more preferable than the Disney version. But anyways, Lindsay’s new movie is “Georgia Rule”, where Lindsay plays Rachel, a rebellious teenager who screams, swears, drinks and is, in a word, uncontrollable. Wait, is that Lindsay’s character in the movie, or a description of Lindsay?

First TRANSFORMERS Review Hits the Net

28 April 2007

With two months and change left til it opens July 4th, reviews for advance screenings of “Transformers” have begun to hit the net. And of course, as it has been for a few years now, AICN was one of the first sites to nab a review. I’m going to skip over the long winded introduction and get to the meaty-gritty: the plot of the film — or what little of it that was given. Here’s how it begins: “It opens with what looks like the surface of a planet, Cybertron, but it doesn’t look anything like the cybertron we know from the cartoons. Its more like a rocky, mountainous wasteland, but alive…if that makes any sense…”

First Look at Jet Li and Andy Lau’s THE WARLORDS, Trailer

27 April 2007

Via AICN, here’s your first look at a 2-minute battle sequence from the upcoming Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro Chinese war epic “The Warlords”. I gotta admit, I like all those three guys, and the idea of the movie intrigues me, but this video, which is cut in a manner that is intended to “sell” the movie to international buyers (it’s not exactly a trailer) doesn’t do it for me. It looks okay. A big action set piece. But you can see the fake “jabbing” going on — you know, you get 500 people together, give them kinda-real weapons, and tell them to “pretend to fight”, which they do, and it looks like crap in a wide shot. But hey, maybe I’m wrong.

X-MEN Villain Magneto Gets his own Movie

27 April 2007

I must be the only fanboy out there who wasn’t/is enamored with Magneto as the villain for all three “X-Men” films. I found the fact that the most dangerous mutant in the world is an frail old man with white hair to be more than a little silly. But apparently I am the only person who thought this, because Variety reports that 20th Century Fox, the studio behind all the “X-Men” films, has tapped comic book go-to guy David Goyer (the “Blade” films, “Batman Begins”) to direct the Magneto movie. The film won’t go into production until the Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman.

Another BLADE RUNNER Version with New Scenes?

27 April 2007

The original “Blade Runner” (1982) is a seminal work of science fiction, but to tell you the truth, I am not entirely enamored with it. And this is speaking as a big fan of sci-fi movies. There’s something about the film, perhaps a slowness (or should I say, dullness) that doesn’t make me list it as among the best sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen. (James Cameron’s “Aliens” tops that list, in case you were wondering.) But I can admit that “Blade Runner” was incredible in many respects, not least of which for providing the inspiration for a slew of sci-fi movies to come. But anyways, there is news that director Ridley Scott is apparently reshooting new scenes for the film’s 25th anniversary DVD edition. Why? I don’t know, I guess there are still things he want to change, even 25 years later. I say, let it go, man.

Hanks to Get $35 Mil for DA VINCI CODE Sequel, Gisele Bundchen Joining Cast?

26 April 2007

The rad dudes over at Cinema Blend thinks they know what is going on with the “Da Vinci Code” sequel (or prequel), “Angels and Demons” (which will once again be directed by Ron Howard). In particular, they have a source that tells them Tom Hanks will be paid a handsome $35 million just to reprise the role — but wait, that’s not all! According to CB, Hanks will also be getting as much as 25% of the movie’s gross earnings, which means he could potentially make as much as $50 million when all is said and done. For one movie. Cripes. And oh yeah, CB was also told that the studio is trying to sign Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen to co-star with Hanks, and that her agent is demanding somewhere around $13 million for her troubles. Um, really?

Chuck Russell to Direct MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN Movie

26 April 2007

Via MovieHole, here’s news that “Scorpion King” and “Eraser” director Chuck Russell is set to helm the live-action big-screen adaptation of Mandrake the Magician. Written by Josh Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, the film follows the magician’s entrance into a world of grand magic and adventure. Jackson Mandrake has always lived life on the edge. Working as an underground magician, Mandrake’s act has grown far too dangerous. One fateful afternoon, a CIA agent approaches Mandrake and requests that the legendary magician help the CIA on a dangerous covert operation. Mandrake reluctantly agrees but soon finds himself caught up in an intricate web of deceit, fighting for his own survival from a brilliant criminal mastermind.

CABIN FEVER 2 Gets Even More Bloody Images

26 April 2007

Fangoria’s got even more bloody (literally) images from the in-progress “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever”, the (sure to be very bloody) sequel to Eli Roth’s 2002 original. In the sequel, a high school prom faces a deadly threat: a flesh-eating virus (from the original, one presumes) that spreads via a popular brand of bottled water. I told them these kids to lay off the spring water. It’s so pretentious — and now it’s deadly! (I knew it all along…)

Tyrese Gibson and Zombies Attack in CONDITION DEAD

26 April 2007

You know I love me my zombie movies, so this news from ComingSoon is right up my alley. It would appear “Transformers” dude Tyrese Gibson, who was last mentioned to be trying to get a Luke Cage movie made, will be producing a zombie movie called “Condition Dead” that will be “a no-holds barred zombie film in the vein of James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’.” Comparing yourself to a badass piece of work like “Aliens” is not a good idea, especially when you don’t have Cameron on board, and instead all you got is Patrick Lussier, aka the King Director of direct-to-video pointless movie sequels.

A Few More FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER Images

25 April 2007

“Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer” will be out June 15th, 2007, but I’ll be damn if I can’t find anyone who is really all that interested in it. It’s kinda like the first one, which is what I’ve said from the beginning when they announced the sequel. I have nothing against “Fantastic Four”, but it just never seemed like a “must see” movie to me. In any case, the powers that be have unleashed some more images from the movie, so here they are. The film stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon, and is directed by Tim Story.

BALLS OF FURY Trailer and Images

24 April 2007

So sue me, but I’m dying to see this one. What’s it about? “A washed-up ping-pong champion must reclaim his skills after being recruited by the government to go undercover and bust a crime lord, who hosts an annual ping-pong tournament in which all the losers are executed.” Yeah, it’s that silly. But hey, it stars Christopher Walken, Maggie Q., Masi Oka, Aisha Tyler, and that guy from “Mortal Kombat”, and there are some nuts ping pong action. I love me some ping pong action. Or, as the Chinese say, ping pong.

Jason Statham in DEATH RACE 2000 Remake Driver’s Seat

23 April 2007

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Jason Statham (most recently seen running like a madman, half-naked through the streets of “Crank”, a most underappreciated gem, I thought) is currently in talks to star in the “Death Race 2000″, a remake of schlockmeister Roger Corman’s 1975 “classic”. And yes, I put the word classic in quotes because I get the feeling any movie over 20 years is now considered a “classic” in this day and age of crappy teen slashers and MTV “romantic comedies”. But I digress. The remake will be called “Death Race”, without the “2000″, which I think would have been fun if they had left it in, sort of a wink and a nod, kinda like how Conan still calls his “In the Year 2,000″ skit with the “2,000″ despite it not being the year 2,000 anymore.
