This is certainly odd, and unexpected news. Apparently Robert Rodriguez, he of the violent crime movies and shoot’em ups, is in talks to direct a live-action big screen version of the “Jetsons” cartoon. Then again, thinking about Rodriguez’s filmography, maybe this isn’t such an odd idea, after all. He has done kid movies before, including his own creation, the “Spy Kids” films, so yeah, this wouldn’t be such a hard thing for Rodriguez to do. He could just go wacky wacky with it the way he did the “Spy Kids” movies. I don’t know about the talking dog, though. Anyways, Rodriguez’s last movie, “Grindhouse”, got massacred at the box office. Hopefully this one will do better.

East Coast film magnante Harvey Weinstein, head of Miramax, is “disappointed” by the failure of “Grindhouse” at the weekend box office, and blames it on the fact that the film is over 3 hours long and those Goddamn stupid Midwesterners. Well, okay, he didn’t say those exact words. He said to Deadline Hollywood, “We didn’t educate the South or Midwest. In the West and the East, the movie played well. It played well in strong urban settings. But we missed the boat on the Midwest and the South.” So you see, the reason “Grindhouse” didn’t do so well was because the South and Midwest are too stupid to “get” the genius of scratching the film print and purposely “losing” entire scenes from the movie. And oh yeah, the movie was nearly 4 hours long and it’s a gory flick that opened on the day of Jesus’ rebirth. Hmm…

It’s only been one day, but it was an important day — Friday, when “Grindhouse’s” main audience should have flocked to see a movie aimed primarily at them on opening night. Instead, “Grindhouse” barely managed a measly $5 million in its debut, coming in at #4 behind top headliners “Blades of Glory” and “Meet the Robinsons” and, more embarassingly, the Ice Cube comedy “Are We Done Yet?” Now I can understand “Grindhouse” failing to beat “Blades of Glory” and the CGI “Meet the Robinsons”, but “Are We Done Yet?” Talk about getting beaten, thrown off the balcony, and then beaten with an umbrella. Sheesh.

Another look at Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s pulp horror two-pack “Grindhouse” has shown up at Yahoo! Movies. Not sure if it’s particularly new, a lot of scenes you’ve already seen already, but I think there are a couple of new ones there. I don’t recall Bruce Willis being in the other trailers, but I could be wrong. I’m looking forward to the movie, but not so much that I’d get in line for it or anything. In fact, I’ll probably wait until it comes out on DVD. Anyways, it actually looks pretty damn good, so check it out at Yahoo! Movies. Click here for it.

Robert Rodriguez (”Sin City”) and Quentin Tarantino (”Kill Bill”) join forces for “Grind House”. So what’s it about? Here’s the official line: “Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez present two full-length movies in a new horror double feature. In Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” Austin’s hottest DJ, Jungle Julia, sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna an Arlene. Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike, a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away. In Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror,” two doctors find their graveyard shift inundated with townspeople ravaged by sores. Among the wounded is Cherry, a dancer whose leg was ripped from her body. As the invalids quickly become enraged aggressors, Cherry and her ex-boyfriend Wray lead a team of accidental warriors into the night.”

I must admit to having never gotten into Michael Allred’s supposedly (I say “supposedly” because I’ve only heard about it, never witnessed it myself) kooky but fun comic book character about some guy who wears white tights and fights crime. I think he fights crime. Maybe he doesn’t fight crime. But I digress. Variety reports that Robert Rodriguez, who is already helming his own comic book turned movie sequel (”Sin City 2″) will produce the “Madman” live-action film based off Allred’s comics, with George Huang to direct. Huang’s big break was the 1994 movie “Swimming with Sharks” starring Kevin Spacey and the TV flick “How to Make a Monster”. He’s not exactly a great director, which bodes poorly for “Madman” the movie. But hey, I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

Youtube, soon to be Gootube (or some other ridiculous name), has a trailer for Austin wunderkind Robert Rodriguez and video store clerk weirdo Quentin Tarantino’s slasher collaboration “Grind House” (or “Grindhouse”, whatever). As expected for everything on Youtube, the quality is suspect (it was ripped from a SpikeTV commercial, after all), but what the hell, beggars can’t be choosers. So what is it about? IMDB.com says: “Two full length feature horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film features. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies.” Oooh, fake movie trailers. How can anyone resist?
