Over-the-top violent, over-the-top vulgar, and over-the-top cool. That’s one way to describe comic scribe Garth Ennis’ “Preacher” comic books. which according to The Hollywood Reporter, is coming to an HBO premium cable channel near you. HBO has nabbed Mark Steven Johnson, the guy who did “Daredevil” and the upcoming Nic Cage starring “Ghost Rider”, to pen the pilot script with Howard Deutch attached to direct. If you haven’t read the comics, you’re missing out. This is one insanely cool series, geeks. Read on…
Preacher, which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God — who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven — and hold him accountable for his negligence.
And yes, if you’re wondering, it really is as f-up and perverted and downright disgusting from a religious standpoint as it all sounds (luckily for me, I like disgusting, perverted, and religion bashing comic books). Now if the TV series can even come close to matching Ennis’ insanity, then it’ll be good. And hey, it’s HBO, so there should be plenty of swearing, sex, and swearing while having sex.
