It would appear conjecture about the demise of Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” franchise was premature, as it now seems (gossip-wise, anyway) that a sequel to “Returns” might not have gone up, up, and away after all. IESB.net claims that a deal for the sequel was finalized, and that Singer will get to “go all Wrath of Kahn” on Superman as he wanted, except it’ll be on a smaller scale. According to the report, the original movie’s $260 million budget will be trimmed to a managable (and easier to recoup) $160 million or thereabouts.
More from IESB.net:
Second, more action, tons more action is expected this time around. The studio was quite happy with the way Supes was reintroduced to the world and next time around expect to see him in full action battle mode. We’ve been told that Superman will have the battle of his life in the sequel and audiences can expect one of the ultimate baddies in the D.C. universe to come to Metropolis to pick a fight with the Man of Steel.
So no more cartoony Lex Luthor yucking it up? Nice! The only thing wrong with “Superman Returns” was Kevin Spacey’s insanely inappropriate character “cartooning” the movie up, while everyone else was playing it with a straight face. Now if they intend to go “full cartoon” on us, that’s good. Either/or, guys, either/or…
