Greg McLean’s “Wolf Creek” wowed critics and fans alike, and thrilled just about everyone else who saw it. McLean’s latest movie, the croc film “Rogue” (not to be confused with the upcoming Jet Li/Jason Statham film of the same name) was supposed to be his next big hit — maybe. Fangoria is reporting that the movie, starring Michael Vartan (”Alias”) and Radha Mitchell (”Pitch Black”) has been beached from the theaters, and will be going straight to DVD on May 20. Considering McLean’s growing reputation with horror fans, this seems like a poor choice by Miramax, but is it? Read on…
“Rogue’s” premise is similar to the recent “Primeval”, which was slaughtered by fans and critics, and not just for its distastefully deceitful marketing campaign, which tried to trick people into thinking it was about a serial killer instead of a giant croc. I guess Miramax doesn’t think people want to see giant killer crocs, and in truth, I think they’re right. Giant killer croc movies belong on DVD, not in theaters.
The Plot: An American travel writer working on a piece in the Australian outback puts him on the menu for an oversized crocodile who stalks the scribe on a river cruise.
The film stars Radha Mitchell, Sam Worthington, Stephen Curry, John Jarratt, and Mia Wasikoska.
